Renewal Help

Post by landrvrnut22 »

Well, I sort of screwed up with my CHL, and need some help.

My CHL expired December 19th. I didn't really catch it till my Church Safety Team head said something. I didn't get any sort of letter, or anything from the Sheriff either (Summit County). I have not been carrying, since I started a new job in September, and it is a Federal Facility, so it's a big NO NO.

What do I need to do to get my CHL? This would have been my second renewal. I do have my original certificate, but it's 11 years old. Do I go and apply for renewal? Or do I need to start from scratch with a fresh class, and new license?

Thank you.

Just go renew. Check with your county's Sheriff to see if they require an appointment or not or if they have specific hours set aside. Being expired changes nothing. Fill out the form, give them your money, and wait.

And don't go to Summit County.....they suck. Go to Portage. You'll get your license in 20-30 minutes.

As far as I know, no counties send out notices taht your CHL is going to expire.

As already noted, you don't have to do anything special to renew - fill out the application, give them the $50 fee, and done. The law says you can renew at any time before or after the license expires, and there are no longer any special requirements for the 2nd (or any other) renewal. I've heard some counties require you to bring your expired license to renew, but I don't see anything in Ohio law that requires it, so...

In addition to Portage being a good county to renew, I like Wayne county - you need to set up an appointment, but for me that's preferable since I can be sure to get in and get it done and not worry about showing up to a line of people or finding the office closed, etc. I've heard of folks walking out with their licenses, but I always schedule that last appointment of the day and just bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope and have them mail it to me. My wife and I have always received them within a couple of days.
