Red Dot/Promo recipes for .500 S&W?

Post by Morne »

All,

So lately I've been loading up some CAS .38Spl loads that use Trail Boss. I had ALMOST forgotten how horribly this stuff meters.

So right now I have only two (2) uses for Trail Boss. Light CAS .38Spl loads and light .500 S&W loads. In fairness, with the .500 S&W loads I use a 1.9cc dipper so the metering issue isn't a big deal. Still, if I can use Red Dot/Promo instead it would be better. I have alternate CAS .38Spl loads using Promo that work great for me.

My google fu fails me in this case. Anybody know of any Red Dot/Promo data for plinking .500 S&W loads?

Sorry, didn't see anything on HandLoads.com or LoadData.com. Saw some Blue Dot loads and other Alliant powders, but nothing using Red Dot or Promo.

Maybe someone with internal ballistics software can figure out a starting load for you to work up from...

Lyman 49th does not have anything. My guess is that all powder and bullet mfg will shy away from such a fast powder in such a large case.

Sometimes you can find stuff in "cowboy" data that is oriented to cast bullets and sedate velocity but the 500 does not really fall into the CAS category very often ;-).

I suspect that the problem you will find is that the appropriate charge of Red Dot in the gargantuan case is going to give you erratic results with each shot. Tip muzzle down before fire and get one result... tip backwards before fire and get a different result. This situation is specifically why they came up with Trail Boss.

In this situation, I don't like Trail Boss -- I prefer Titegroup, because Titegroup doesn't seem to care.

I'll admit that I have never tried bunnyfart loads with any powder in .460/.500 Mag, I would imagine a LARGE shift in elevation might be likely? I'm almost always in the camp of handloading enthusiasts that NEVER care "why", I believe any/every safe handloading adventure has merit and I ignore folks who bash odd ideas. But for my own needs, the big revolvers are actually too damn gangly to enjoy using with light stuff. So my .460 aims for 2,000 fps at the muzzle.
I like to swap brass... and I'm looking for .32 H&R Mag, .327 Fed Mag, .380 Auto and 10mm. If you have some and would like to swap for something else, send me a note!
