My wife asked an interesting question -- what happens here in Ohio if someone is carrying openly while wearing a mask to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

Well, the mask may or may not help stop the spread of Covid. Depends on which expert you ask, and when.

There is no law in Ohio (and none in Federal law for that matter) prohibiting wearing a mask while legally carrying a firearm. Matters not if you are openly carrying or carrying concealed (with a CHL of course), it is perfectly legal in Ohio.

(For what it's worth, the only state I know of that does have such a law that does not also have a medical exemption is Illinois)

Many localities have anti mask laws that make it an additional criminal penalty to wear a mask while committing any crime. These are usually anti KKK laws. They can assemble, but any misdemeanor gets the anti mask penalty taked on.

This potentially matters to gun owners for similar reasons. Didn't see the sign, and you were wearing a mask? For CHL holders: Didn't notify "promptly" and you were wearing a mask, etc.

Would the charge hold up on appeal, given the CDC recommendation? Who knows? Also, who feels like spending all that money it would cost to find out.

Statutes overrule recommendations.

Don't think it truly matters. Either way, you'll probably have a lot less people bothering you about your decision to wear a mask if you do.
