Open Carry is carrying a firearm unconcealed in Ohio. OC does not require a concealed handgun license, but the practice requires intimate knowledge of the law since there are places and situations where OC is prohibited but carrying concealed would be permitted. OC is also likely to attract attention. This forum is for discussion of OC, not for debating the pro's and con's or coordinating any type of protest events.
"Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home
Let me die in a pile of empty brass."

If one were to casually question your reasons for carrying a firearm, how do you respond? Say for example, your neighbors 4-year old just flatly asks you, "OFCC'er, why do you have a gun?" I assume you are not going to immediately jump in to the whole 2nd Amendment/constitutionality debate but would instead use that particular scenario as a means of education. Suppose it is someone, or someone's kid, you do not know. What responses have you all come up with?
Again, this is not the contentious sidewalk debate I am referring to. I am assuming many of us have been asked out of legitimate curiosity but maybe not.

Recently that very think happened to me. I was with my granddaughter in a park open carrying. She was playing with another little girl she met, about the same age. The little girl asked me in the sweetest, most innocent voice. "Why do you have a gun"? I told her "In case a bad man comes, I can protect us". She was fine with that answer and continued playing.

I read one somewhere the other day that was a good reply to an adult asking that question. It went like this: Someone asked me the other day why I had a gun. My reply was: Because the whole officer is too heavy to carry. ..I loved that one..That's quick witted there

I didn't come up with this answer , heard it from someone else but if the question is not asked right, repeat their question and rephrase it by saying.... "whats that.....why do I "carry" a gun?.......because it hasn't learned how to to walk yet!
