CCW while caring for a special needs toddler

Post by CCWparent »

Both myself and my wife are seriously looking into CCW.

The problem is, we have a toddler with special needs. He’s epileptic, cortical vision impaired, and non verbal ( but not on the spectrum ) and also uses an AAC device for communication.

So we potentially have our hands full at any given moment.

We are trying to figure out what would be best gun for CCW and the best way to carry.

I’m thinking for myself possibly ankle carry, but am not familiar with what’s best for it. My wife is undecided.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about the special needs toddler interfering at all with your carry. With a toddler, however, always maintain control with a good retention holster. Personally, I would use a holster with a thumb snap, not just a fitted holster which holds a gun securely but can still be taken out by wandering hands.

I'll let others answer the type of gun.

My personal 2 cents..
Which handgun works best for ‘you’ must take into account many variables.
1) what fits your hands well
2) what you can shoot well
3) what you can conceal well based on your attire/mode of carrying
4) Reiterating JavMan’s suggestion, I also think a thumb break retention is the way to go..
The thumb release holsters I’m most familiar with are Orpaz Defense (better in my book) and Alien Gear. The holster you choose will also fit only a certain variety of firearms.
5) .. I’m sure there are more

It’s been my personal experience and also a general consensus from others that ankle carry isn’t preferable mostly due to uncomfortable weight and uneasy accessibility.
