CCW Renewal

Post by charliej47 »

On Monday I went to Dayton to the Montgomery County sheriff's office to renew my CCW. SURPRISE SURPRISE I was in and out within 15 minutes. I MUST say that I was also surprised to find out that I did not have to pay for the renewal nor the $6 picture fee since I am a VET.

I wrote a note to the sheriff about how professional his people were!

One thing about the "free" renewal is that there is a $$ limit, so if you want it then renew as early as possible in the year. Once the $$ amount is depleted no more free ones til the next year. Renewing early is honestly worth it if you ever buy guns and your dealer takes CHL instead of calling in or doing online NICS.

Too bad Montgomery isn't an adjacent county for me.

Yes, state law changed to allow this, in addition to allowing people to renew at any time.

When I called to set up a renewal appointment for Lorain County they made a point to ask me if I was a veteran.

Sure as h3ll!:

From the HCSO website:
IMPORTANT Senate Bill 81 INFORMATIONSenate Bill-81 which allows for veterans to receive a no-cost CCW license is effective beginning Monday, November 5, 2018. If you are an active, reserve, or retired member of the armed forces, or were honorably discharged, there is no fee to apply for a new or renewal license. You must present an active duty ID or a form DD-214 showing a honorable discharge at the time of application. NOTE: The Attorney General monitors the number of license fees waived statewide and caps the total amount allowed to be waived at $1.5 million each year. When the funds are depleted statewide, the fee will no longer be waived until January of the following year.

One thing about is that there is an annual cap on how many $$ are forgiven, so it is not a sure thing that later in the year it will not run dry for 2019. For most folks renewing now it is saving you the NICS check if the dealer is willing so if you can renew I'd suggest doing it sooner rather than later if you want to take advantage of the forgiven license fees before they run dry for the year.
