School Field Trip

In a couple weeks I will be accompanying my granddaughter on a school field trip. We will not be going to the school first, and will be travelling in my personal automobile to the site. I have spoken to the owner of privately owned business where we are going, and was told legally concealed firearms are welcome. Although this is a school sponsored trip, is there any reason why I can't carry during the trip?

Thanks
Duke

It sounds like this qualifies as a "school activity" and as such, you cannot legally carry outside of your vehicle while participating in it.

The way I have had this explained to me is like so:

Example 1: If you are walking your dog in the morning and you walk through the middle of a group of kids gathered at a school bus stop while armed, you are perfectly legal. HOWEVER, if you are the parent of one of those kids and you walked them to the bus stop, you are not legal to carry there, as it is a "school safety zone."

Example 2: if you are eating lunch at McDonald's and a school soccer team bus rolls in to have lunch, you are legal to carry there, HOWEVER if you are the team's stat man and you are with them, that's a school safety zone and you aren't legal to carry.

Oh yes, these examples show us how ludicrous most gun laws are, especially school related gun laws are.

I agree that no, you may not legally be armed on the excursion you have described. However, if you happened to be retired LEO, then the laws shine down upon you and you are legal.

I have been at a public park that has only one entrance in/out. I was clear back in the park one day when four buses with school kids came in along with park rangers for a field/nature trip. The only way out for me was through the maze of school kids. With the gray areas in the law I sweating by the time I got out that a ranger would not stop and greet me.

I do not see it any different then taking your granddaughter to school for a drop off, then have to go inside for paperwork. That was one of the reasons given for the law change. Lock your CHL pistol(s) in the vehicle, and go inside for paperwork; in this example driving your granddaughter to the school function, lock your pistol or pistol(s) in vehicle, go to function.

My $.02 :) , perhaps further clarification is warranted.

Again, you were not breaking the law. You were in a public place and not taking part in the school function. Had you been a chaperone or a teacher, that's a different matter.

Carrying it in the car is certainly a grey (probably dark grey) area. If he is taking other children besides his granddaughter, it's certainly a no-go to carry, even in the car.

His car doesn't become a school zone just because he's using it to bring his daughter to an off-site school activity anymore than it would be one if he were bringing his daughter to the school. The same goes if he were - as a private parent - bringing other children (with their parents' permission - not at the school's direction). OTOH if he were bringing other children because he signed up with the school do to so, then yes I agree in that case he just turned his car into a school zone.

For future reference, a simple greeting by an officer does not require you to notify. You must be stopped for a law enforcement purpose to trigger the requirement to notify. In other words, the interaction must be in his official capacity as an officer of the law.

I don't see why you can't take the gun with you and just leave it in your car when you exit the vehicle!
