RULE CHANGE re: Bullet-Resistant Products

Post by evan price »

Effective immediately, there will be an update to the rules for advertising in the Marketplace.

"Ballistic Products: Sellers offering bullet-resistant items such as bullet-proof vests, etc. shall include in the advertisement the manufacturers' name and model, and the date code of manufacture. Typically this is on a tag sewn into the lining of the product. Ads which do not list this information will be removed."

Please be aware that vests containing Zylon fiber were found by the US Department of Justice to be significantly degraded when exposed to normal working conditions such as heat, sweat, and UV exposure. A DOJ test showed that even older Zylon fiber vests that had an upgrade kit installed still failed performance tests at an alarming rate.

In 2003, a Forest Hill PA police officer on anti-narcotics duty was shot by a suspect with a .40 caliber pistol. One round penetrated his Second Chance vest. The officer survived, but the vest should have stopped the bullet. This began an investigation as to why the vest did not perform. Other used armor was tested and 58% of the used armor failed the test and allowed a bullet to penetrate. Here is a writeup about the vest failures:

Here is a link to the PDF document for the Phase-III vest performance evaluations from 8-05 published by the US DOJ:

There are many old vests and ballistic gear items still in circulation which do not meet the NIJ specification and are thus not considered safe for duty. If you are considering a purchase of a bullet-proof vest or other such item, you are encouraged to learn as much as you can about them before making a purchase.

OFCC realizes that we are providing nothing more than a forum to post ads, similar to the bulletin board at a supermarket. However we reserve the right to delete ads which we feel are not beneficial to our community.
