So by their standards a Taurus PT111 G2 or even a Jimenez 9mm is good to go, but not my compact 45 auto or a friend's 8 shot S&W revolver.

"WTF" was my first reaction, too, but a couple of days ago, I read a very interesting article by Claude Werner:

We're constantly writing/saying that so-and-so should "stay in their lane." Claude Werner presents a very interesting way to look at this proclamation by the Carry Guard instructors, if we keep this saying in-mind.

Ah, but for a professional <ahem> training organization to fail to bring in expertise to fill that gap is in my opinion inexcusable. In fact, Claude himself comments thusly:
How often has the meme ‘Stay in your lane’ surfaced lately? To his credit, when Rob Pincus wanted to make a DVD about Snub Revolvers, he brought me in to do it, just as he did with Dryfire.
How can the NRA claim this is the ne plus ultra of carry training if they do not do likewise?

I can see Claude's point, and I accept that as a very valid reason for those limitations. However, if you are going to market yourself as THE expert training resource - you should be able to handle differences in handgun platforms.

I am hearing that Carry Guard training is not through the Training and Education department like all other curriculum for students and instructors. The hope is (was?) that a "fresh set of eyes" on their curriculum might make improvements in their methodology and processes. Especially after the whole "experiment" in blended training.

However, it appears that the NRA took the tactical training approach with this endeavor. It seems to be an effort to join the crowd of tactical trainers in the marketplace, but with the marketing power of the NRA behind them. With that sort of influence behind them, they could have done so much more.

When was the last time you heard the NRA pushing their PPITH/PPOTH classes? Their Defensive Pistol has disappeared from the offerings. What about going after the women's training market? (Trust me, there is a market there. Chuck and I did a free ladies class in response to the Kirkersville shooting - and the response was through the roof. We had to shut ladies out of the class because it was too large.)

With the ladies in particular in mind, I expect that they will be turned off by this tactical approach. Regardless of whether the curriculum is actually "tactical" (and it does not seem to be overly so), the marketing presence the NRA is putting behind this is enough to shun a large portion of the female market.

As an instructor myself, I stress the importance of additional training to all CHL students. Come back to me - if I can't help you, I will find another who can. I see how few actually try to get more training. When you have a major organization pushing their tactical look and feel - that will turn off even more people.

It's a shame really. And, in my mind at least, this bolsters why the USCCA training is gaining ground so quickly. (I had a respected friend and instructor come to me after the ladies class to ask if I would teach the USCCA curriculum to his family members. That speaks volumes to me personally.)

Oh, definitely - with this, I totally agree.

There's a definite disconnect, and that's something that they need to remedy. And it's really both too bad and quite surprising that they did not catch this in the first place.

Great point. They won't get me if it is too tactical/military. That is not my interest. Getting my kids and myself home after grocery shopping is my interest. Teaching tactics to keep the kids and me safe as I get them out is my interest.

I think lots of moms would think the same way.

One of the things I don't understand about this course offering is the whole purpose of Carry Guard is supposed to be to help you with the aftermath of a shooting. There are so many courses that can teach someone how to shoot. Why not concentrate on courses to teach people when to shoot, and when not to? I don't mean just a lecture in a classroom, but force on force training with real life type USA scenarios that an ordinary citizen is more likely to face (not run and gun in Baghdad) and using some kind of non lethal devices. (simulitions, etc)
