Pentagon Developing Polymer Cased Ammo

Post by schmieg »

This is an interesting article on the Pentagon's ongoing attempts to lighten the weight load of ammo and weapons for the troops.

So I guess non-brass casings aren't as harmful to rifles as some of the old wives tails would have you believe, or the military just doesn't care? I would think function and reliability would be high on their list and they wouldn't be making this shift unless they didn't think there were any issues.

I've been shooting polymer coated bullets, hopefully with no ill effect! They do leave the barrel nice and clean. I hope that is not a negative!

Thanks for the link. Great article.

I think this is LONG overdue. I think it is the next "great leap forward."

Weight is the main issue, then cost, IMO. I'm certain reliability is key here, or it's a "non-starter."

Will the Army/Marine Infantryman carry less overall weight if the ammo is lighter? My guess is NO. They will carry more ammo.

Kalifornia and New Jersey will never see this as those two states are working toward "Smart Gun" technology which stamps serial numbers on the case. Of course, the stamp on a polymer case would be just as legible (read, NOT) as on a brass case.

Would this lead to possibly more littering at outdoor ranges as people wouldn't bother picking up cases to reload? Or the same people will police their own cases as did before?

Good point on the possible spike in littering..
I wonder if it could be reloadable?

In Viet Nam, we carried as much as we could get and stand up with it.
