I have a few knives that are coated with Ti-N, as well as drill bits. What's the deal?

What properties doe this finish impart on metal, and why is it used on cutting tools?

Can it come in different colors?

It can come in different colors, but usually is a gold color.

The deal is that Ti-N helps keep an edge with its high rigidity and hardness. Plus, it being so thin allows it to work on a fine feature like a knife edge.

I had my RIA 1911 nitrided. Best thing Ive ever done. Looks great and will virtually never rust. Not to mention it makes the surface hard as diamond and they claim it makes the gun more accurate(on ar's anyway). Anyone that can afford it should.

May I ask where you got it done? Link to their website?

Before I sold my 1911 I talked with these people - I'll be doing business with them in the future.

Bo and Shade do good work there.

If someone would do the cyanate process correctly, I'd trust them to do it. Personally, I still prefer the cracked ammonia gaseous process, but that's just me.

CCR doing Glock slides in CeraPlate (nickel boron) for $69 per slide + shipping costs

See Glocktalk forum classifieds. I'm sending 2.

The Niboron process. As stated before, it is an electroless nickel with emulsified boron tossed in. For simple geometry parts, like the exterior of a slide, it should work OK.

MG Precision in Canton is doing TiN coatings on firearms and such now. Gold, Silver, Black, and Rose colors. They have technical names for those colors, but I dont feel like looking it up lol.

The stuff comes out awesome looking.

If you don't mind the "pimp" cannotations of these colors, TiN coating is indeed a very hard, durable, and proven coating. Depending on the shine on the base metal it is applied to, it can be mirror to brushed look.

If you want a GOLD gun, this is the way to go.

I just scoured this old stickey for what is DLC. I have a pistol on order that is "black stainless" and the maker told me the finish is DLC.

Supposed to be pretty hard and wear resistant, but what is it, I wonder?

It is a PVD (physical vapor deposited) coating much like TiN/Ionbond/whatever. The term “DLC” is an acronym for “diamond like carbon”. Much like TiN it is very thin and very brittle. On the plus side it has crazy high hardness and very good coefficient of friction.

DLC has a dark grey or almost black appearance which I think looks nicer on a serious gun than the old golden appearance of TiN on your Deagles.

Not deagle, Kahr. Thought about the de, but couldn't find a decent ankle holster for it.

Thanks for all that. I think I would have prefered the matte or satin stainless, but somehow the black was less money. Sounds like it turned out to be a good thing.

Now I need to follow up and google "PVD (physical vapor deposited) coating" to complete my CEU in OFCC U. Pray there's no quiz.
