Security guard killed in Dayton

Post by M-Quigley »

Although the radio news said he was off duty, that might be misleading. He was at a nightclub and his shift was over, he was one of the last people to leave and that's when he got shot and killed. The guard was allegedly a former police chief somewhere in Clinton county. The mont. co Sheriff believes it was a targeted shooting. It was after he left the building and got into his car that someone came up to the car and shot him.

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP — An off-duty nightclub security guard was shot and killed inside a vehicle early Monday morning.

On News Center 7 at 5:00, Mike Campbell spoke to Montgomery County Sheriff Rob Streck who explained why he thinks this shooting was targeted.

Around 2:50 a.m., Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Napoleon’s Palace in the 4100 block of Germantown Pike on reports of a shooting.

“Information that indicates the person waited for him to come out, get in the car, and as soon as he got in the car he was shot,” Streck said.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has not identified the victim yet, but a flood of Facebook posts identified the victim as Darnell Pate.

News Center 7 has confirmed that the victim worked as a police officer for a handful of local agencies.

A law enforcement source also indicated he attended Edison State Peace Officer Academy.

News Center 7′s Mike Campbell spoke with a woman who said she came to Napoleon’s to pay tribute to Pate. She identifies herself as J-Bird.

J-Bird was stunned to hear of Pate’s death.

“We play pool here, this is just crazy, it’s crazy because I was just here a couple of days ago and he was here, he patted me down,” J-Bird said.

Streck said this kind of violence was not a spur-of-the-moment, emotional reaction.

“We 100% believe this was a targeted attack,” Streck said.

Streck said the security guard was one of the last people to leave after his shift.

Sounds to me this fine establishment is in a upscale community, just another day at the office when you have to get patted down before entering a bar.......

A flood of social media posts hailed Pate as a man who will not only be missed but a man who served and protected as a sworn officer.

News Center 7 confirmed that Pate worked as a police officer in the small village of Addyston in Hamilton County.

He also served as a police officer in the village of New Vienna in Clinton County, including three months as the interim chief.

According to the New Holland Village Administrator, Pate worked as a reserve officer in 2022 and 2023. They said Pate was a fine officer and professional.

From Oct. 2019 to Jan. 2020, Pate was an officer with the Union City Police Department.

Pate’s death is causing shock among friends, family, and those who knew his work.

“It’s just crazy, it’s sad, how life works, one day you are here, the next day you’re gone,” one woman said.

Streck said his office isn’t sure what the exact motive in this shooting was, but it is possible that it didn’t have anything to do with Pate’s security guard job.
Deputies found him dead in his vehicle, news that hit hard with family, friends, people he worked with in Ohio police departments, and even all the way in South Dakota.

“Unfortunately, it struck us here, he was part of our family,” said Geody VanDewater, the police chief in Sturgis, South Dakota.

News Center 7 reached out to VanDewater, who posted a picture he took with Pate as a tribute after learning of his death.

“Darnell and a couple of his partners came out and worked with us for a couple of years,” he said.

Sturgis, South Dakota is the home of the world’s largest motorcycle rally every year.

Thousands of bikers descend on the tiny town, and so do a lot of law enforcement professionals working for the 10 days of the rally as Sturgis police officers.

“Handle calls, make arrests like our regular officers, partnered with our full-time guys,” VanDewater said.

VanDewater said the picture with Pate was not just a click-and-forget honoring people who helped out. Pate worked the rally for three years in a row and the chief said his constant smile and personality made him well-known and well-liked across the entire department.

“Everyone that knew Darnell is taking this pretty tragically and it’s impacting us pretty bad,” VanDewater said.

VanDewater said all of his officers are watching Dayton news reports closely and are hopeful the people responsible will be tracked down.

“Unfortunately this senseless act, hopefully, it doesn’t go unnoticed, Darnell deserved better than that,” VanDewater said.

Sheriff’s deputies did say they know whoever gunned Pate down used a stolen vehicle that they dumped.
