A Cleveland woman is accused of buying a rifle that was later used in the attempted robbery of the Willoughby Eastlake Schools Credit Union.

Marshyia Ligon, 20, has been indicted on one count of making a false statement in the acquisition of a firearm.

The Department of Justice said that Ligon lied when she bought a Smith & Wesson M&P 15, 556 caliber rifle from Sherwin Shooting Sports in Eastlake. She allegedly said she was the buyer of the rifle, when she was actually buying the gun for someone else.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in March the Department of Justice would renew focus on prosecuting cases involving buyers who lie on federal background check forms. While the department has caught dozens of such transactions in the last four months,

Obama talked, but did nothing about straw purchasers. Almost like there was a plan (Fast n Furious anyone).

IIRC, during the Clinton/Reno days, the DOJ had a major reduction of prosecutions.
The theory was they wanted an increase in crime as an excuse to lobby for more restrictive laws.

...aside from the political tit-for-tat of who improves their electoral chances in the future...

Are we encouraged that one can be indicted/jailed for purchasing property that they intend to sell the next day to a person who the database is built against?

Are we such cheerleaders of the databases?

Are we so dedicated to the "Prohibited Person" concept which limits property rights of some in free society, that we are willing to jail otherwise innocent people, making them "Prohibited Persons" in turn?

Of course this database of "Prohibited Persons" is fatally flawed and that things like "Straw Purchases", in a capitalistic society where people are marinating in debt, will occur. It's ludicrous to think that this is even an enforceable concept to any degree of relevance.

Budgets need justified, though.

I think we all, as law abiding gun owners, have an interest in the truly bad actors being prosecuted. I am assuming the bank robbers had prior records where they could not not purchase themselves (hence the ATF involvement). This lady is not likely to have been dumb enough not to have known and the short time frame from purchase to use in a bank robbery makes this a fairly obvious case. Considering the number of mass murder events where there was a long line of people sticking their head in the ground this is what we need. Of course, murder and bank robbery are already illegal.
God,

and the Wisdom to know the difference.

Carrying a gun is a right, not a crime.

Gun control is racist.
