Comply with Registration, because we're law-abiding?

Post by bignflnut »

REGISTRATION ENDS AT 11:59:59 P.M. ON JUNE 30, 2018.

Gun Owners of California fought tooth and nail against legislation outlawing bullet buttons and the expansion of the “assault weapon” definition, but nonetheless, we strongly urge compliance with the law. Remember, we are law-abiding. If we don’t like the laws, rather than break them, we will work diligently to change them – in the courts, legislatively – and through the elections.

In 2016, Assembly Bill 1135 and Senate Bill 880 were signed by Governor Brown and require that any person who, from January 1, 2001, to December 31, 2016, lawfully possessed an assault weapon that does not have a fixed magazine – including those weapons with an ammunition feeding device that can be readily removed from the firearm with the use of a tool (commonly referred to as a bullet-button) – must register the firearm before July 1, 2018 (extended from the original date of January 1, 2018).

For information on what is specifically required to register firearms as “assault weapons” click HERE to be linked to the Department of Justice website.

DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!

REGISTRATION ENDS AT 11:59:59 P.M. ON JUNE 30, 2018

Anyone choosing not to register must either convert their firearms to comply with the new laws/regulations or disassemble them so that they are non-functional.
All applications for assault weapon registration must be submitted by the deadline. No applications will be accepted thereafter.
Read the requirements in advance of the deadline (link above); photos and proof of residency are among the items required. Don’t be caught at the last minute without adequate information to submit.
Registration requires creating a California Firearms Application Reporting System (CFARS) account (https://cfars.doj.ca.gov/login.do" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
If history is any indicator, it’s important to register sooner rather than later. The Department of Justice website has been known to malfunction when deadlines approach. Be aware – if there is a problem, it will be the REGISTRANT’S fault – not DOJ’s.
Conflict arises when only one side obeys the law.
The side that sets the law has disobeyed it, and should not be obeyed.

It's advice like GOC's which leads a State to Registration, so it's not surprising that California has arrived there.

NJ also has a recent measure that demands compliance.
Yesterday, Gov. Phil Murphy signed a package of gun control laws that included reducing the New Jersey magazine capacity limit from 15 rounds to 10 rounds, meaning in 180 days, hundreds of thousands of gun owners will become felons if they don’t sell, modify, or otherwise get rid of their already limited 15-round magazines for long guns and handguns.

Within minutes, the Association of NJ Rifle & Pistol Clubs filed a suit in federal court to overturn the new law.

“This unconstitutional law will be ignored by criminals and madmen, and affects only law-abiding citizens,” said ANJRPC executive director Scott Bach in a release. “It turns one million people into criminals with the stroke of a pen, limits self-defense, and takes away property lawfully acquired.”

“Buy it yesterday, ban it today, go to prison tomorrow – it’s the Jersey way, and the goal of our lawsuit is to boot this law, which makes no one safer, into the trash heap of history where it belongs,” Bach added.
At what point do we advocate that people not comply with obviously null and void laws?

Now, waiting until the last minute is usually not a recipe for success, but as long as there was time on the clock, people are free to procrastinate. It’s up to the state of California to make sure its website works.

And it didn’t.

Constant crashes delay people being able to comply with the law, and it’s not their fault. Like I said, waiting until the last minute might not be ideal, but it’s not illegal, and it’s not their fault the state can’t build a working website. <Insert random “lowest bidder” joke here.>

Now, those who weren’t able to register their guns despite trying to may well be guilty of a felony as you read this. Hopefully not. So far, though, there’s been no mention of an amnesty for those who tried but were turned away by the state’s ineptitude.

To err is human. To really foul stuff up, though, you need the government involved.

This is a prime example.
Why wouldn't people wait till the last minute, what with legal injunctions being filed and considered, one hopes, right? Right?
