What to do with your gun when you get there

Post by Ardvark »

I have considered getting a CCW for some time, however ALL instances in which I would like to have a firearm for protection have been walking to and from venues or establishments were firearms are not permitted (concerts, sporting events, etc.). I really can’t think of any situations when I would be out walking, but not going somewhere that prohibits firearms. Under what circumstances do others find having a CCW beneficial? Thanks in advance for your input.

I tend to stay away from places that strip me of my rights whenever possible. I carry my firearm where ever I legally can, to protect myself, and my family. I think that is pretty beneficial.

You can't ever know ahead of time when you need it,I would think most people who have needed it weren't expecting to.
I know it doesn't help with your question but I drive everywhere and lock it in the car if I must go to a gun free zone like the post office.

Yesterday I went to a "racino" for a group luncheon. Happen to know one of their armed guards, and he was going to be on duty then. I asked him to keep a sharp eye on our gathering..at least until I left.

Usually this group gathers at restaurants without gun free zone restrictions. So, I abstain from alcohol, and carry.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

My last renewal of my PA license (I have to get down there and renew if they'll let me - I'm about a month overdue) was mailed to me with a cover letter indicating the places I couldn't carry. Including the Courthouse where the paperwork was done.

NBD except that the letter was pretty insistent that I NOT leave a gun in my car, ever.

I doubt if this would be enforced (or enforceable) but....

My first issuance or renewal at the Columbiana County Sheriff's Station (at the County Jail) gave me some pause as a young man who appeared to be a trusty asking me if I was there for a CHL. My 1911 was locked in the car, and he knew which car was mine....

I generally do not patronize CPZs, and lock the weapon in the car if I have to go inside.

Stu.

Do you see an advantage to renewing? Ohio now covers all of the states that PA does (if you've renewed your Ohio license since March 23, 2015). Unless you spend a lot of time in PA, it doesn't seem worthwhile to me.

Again as others have stated, welcome :D

From your post if I may...

''I have considered getting a CCW for some time, however ALL instances in which I would like to have a firearm for protection have been...''

Ans as stated by another poster, ''You can't ever know ahead of time when you need it,I would think most people who have needed it weren't expecting to.''

To that I add, all instances & expectations includes...the future.I cannot predict my future 110%. Sooner of later the ''daily routine'' will shift. And there's ever the possibility of a political shift in Ohio whereas the shift goes more towards shifty. What if the next fellow/fellowette/fellowitwerewulf/martian clamps down some? Raises the permit fee?

Also an Ohio CHL 'allows' other activities such as, parking in a school zone i.e. parking lot for a football game (lock pistol in vehicle). Some stores will let your CHL permit serve as your background check on a firearms purchase
Do not discount the fact that the % of permittees who violate laws are a extremely small, microscopic sized group of persons. Swelling those numbers only adds to the raw data and based in fact: Ohio CHL permittees are a well regulated lawful good-guy group. In both interactions with law enforcement and legislative considerations, facts traditionally rule the day.Sometimes the next day hehe.Join the group!!

Again, a wealth of info re: Ohio gun rights etc on THIS forum, WELCOME ! ! !

Welcome to the forums.

My lifestyle seldom includes voluntary entry into criminal protection zones. I purposely try to avoid such places. That said I completely understand your concerns.

One of my goals, one I believe is shared by most on this forum, is to eliminate as many CPZ's as possible so that this is not an issue in the future. When you are making your decision whether or not to exercise the right and accept the responsibility of becoming a licensed concealed handgun carrier in Ohio, I hope that you will consider that every concealed carry license issued in Ohio helps OFCC in the quest to improve concealed carry laws in Ohio and the nation.

Bearing in mind that Lawrence County PA is just over the border from here, and that the current AG in PA seems to be an anti (she's apparently responsible for the end of mail-order licensing), it seems like a good idea :) ....

Also, while my wife's relatives in New Castle are now all deceased, she has friend there that we like to visit from time to time. (We visit the deceased ones once in a while, too. They don't say much :D . One of them would come over to visit us in order to plop down in front of the TV set and watch PIT hockey games that were blacked out a home. He never said much until after the game :) .)

If I had to drive to State College ("Center County"), where I'd been doing my mail-order registrations for some years, though, I'd probably give it some thought. That's a long ride, although it might be fun during the Fall (color of leaves) season. There's a bridge on I-80 that's worth a visit, too.

I just did the OH renewal, so that's not an isssue. It was 'cause PA covered TX, and I have a sister in Dallas. She used to live almost "downtown", which barely required a weapon v.s. any paranoia on my part :), but now has a small ranch property way out in the middle of nowhere.

Stu.

Do try to keep up Stu! The virulent anti-2A Attorney General who indeed monkeyed quite a bit with handgun licenses is no more. Seems she had some other problems with the concept of "the end justifies the means" and was convicted of perjury and grand jury secrecy violations. Now being a felon she was disbarred and sentenced to almost two years in prison. She's been out of prison pending various appeals. From what I can tell her latest appeal within the PA court system was turned down last month so her report date ticks closer...

The current AG is also a (D) but from what my PA friends tell me he's stayed relatively silent on 2A matters. Instead he has chosen to focus on the more pressing priorities of the office, given that pornographic emails among the staff and perjury/grand jury leaks were a large part of what tripped up his predecessor. Caution is advised though because apparently Bloomberg likes his positions on guns and donated to his campaign. Having said that, he doesn't appear to have gotten his money's worth (yet).

Welcome to OFCC, Ardvark. :)

I am very glad that you know when you'd likely need to have a defensive weapon on you - and I honestly wish that I had kind of crystal ball in my possession. ;)

You get what I mean by that, right?

The truth of the matter is that we cannot choose when and we must face our attacker(s). I'd venture to say that, if I - or you - could, then we would rather choose to simply NOT BE THERE, no?

After all, even if we were in the right to defend ourselves, there's no guaranty on the outcome of the legal proceedings thereafter, and there is certainly no way to escape the expenses. And that's not even taking into account the emotional toll of having hurt or potentially having ended the lives of those who sought to do you or your loved ones harm...and it's definitely discounting the simple fact that, even with a firearm, you simply may not "win" that physical fight.

If I had that crystal ball, Ardvark, I'd simply choose to not be there for that fight, as that's the only guaranteed way that I will win.

So, without that crystal ball, what can - what do - I do?

Just like how I have a fire-extinguisher on every level (plus one more in the kitchen!) in my home and how I always have my trauma kit on my person, I carry my defensive handgun whenever I legally can, wherever I legally can.

What about those end-destinations where I cannot? Simple: I lock the weapon in my vehicle (provided, of-course, that's a legal recourse I have available - sometimes, I must simply leave the gun at home, given my intended destination's restrictions).

As with the other members here, I try not to make my destination one where I must surrender my best-odds method of self-defense. But alas, because of our family's lifestyle, this isn't always possible/practical.

Given that I cannot avoid these areas outright, my defensive mindset is that the gun is just one of many tools I may have in my possession or may be able to use to accomplish the goal of keeping myself and my loved ones safe. Realize as Jared Reston said in his Police One interview ( https://www.policeone.com/police-heroes ... ed-Reston/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) that YOU are the weapon. The gun may be the most effective tool, but it is just one tool. On your walk back from those events, can you stay on the more traveled paths, with noticeable police/security presence? Would you be willing to sacrifice a few minutes' of time in getting to the event earlier to be able to secure better parking? Or maybe spend a few more dollars for better parking (is $50 for the valet a reasonable trade-off for your personal security - how about trading off the cost of a few beers during the event, for this expense - especially with the idea that with less alcohol in your/your companions' systems, you will be able to better respond to threats)? Are you and your companions willing to sacrifice a bit of personal style in order to insure that you have the appropriate footwear to run to safety? Are you willing to undertake some level of training in unarmed combatives and personal fitness, given your very realistic outlook of when/where you cannot be legally armed?

And since your renewed Ohio CHL now includes Texas reciprocity, you could save the Pennsylvania license fee & assorted gas costs. Buy ammo instead. 8)
