4th or 5th renewal

Post by Big Boomer »

My current 5 year CHL expires in Feb of 18. Does anyone know what the current renewal requirements are?

Thanks,

$50 and an application.

What pirateguy191 said. To build on that, those are the only requirements under Ohio law - but be aware that some counties try to impose their own extra-legal requirements. For example, some require a photo, some only require a photo if you haven't applied through their county before. Some require a copy of your training certificate, and in one case I've heard they required anyone renewing from a different county treat it like a new application.

Now, *none* of those requirements have a legal basis - but whether or not you challenge them is of course up to you and your willingness to take the time and effort to do so. However, if you encounter one of them, whether or not you decide to challenge it, please let us know. We have a secret weapon in the form of "Ohio's Friendliest Compliance Coordinator" - and it seems lately we haven't given him much to do...

Rubber walls are what you might be looking at if you try to make sense out of what some of the sheriffs want as compared to what the law says.

Ninety days.
(a) Except as provided in division (F)(1)(b) of this section, a licensee who wishes to renew a concealed handgun license issued under this section shall do so not earlier than ninety days before the expiration date of the license or at any time after the expiration date of the license...

Senate Bill 81 removes that ninety day limit and allows renewals at any time. It is currently waiting for the Republican leadership to schedule a vote.
