Baltimore and Cleveland fans to receive DNA tests

Post by bignflnut »

Here's a Friday head scratch-er:
The Ravens on Sunday are adopting a unique approach: The tens of thousands of fans entering M&T Bank Stadium for the NFL team’s home opener against the Cleveland Browns will receive free DNA test kits.

It’s an approach stretching the usual giveaway model, and likely to generate fan buzz. The club calls it “one of the most innovative events a partner has ever spearheaded.”

SNIP

Fans who choose to participate can learn about their genetic makeup, says Orig3n, the Boston-based biotech firm sponsoring the event. The procedure begins when fans swab the inside of their cheek, drop the sample into a stadium bin and register with the company online.

The assessment offers “insight into your mind, body and health,” a company spokeswoman said.

Promotional material prepared for the event bears the logos of the company and the Ravens. It depicts a DNA strand with the message: “Purple and Black are in your genes — now find out what else is.”
No. Purple and Black ain't genetic science, kids...off to a great start...

Makes me wonder: How many marketing campaigns started on an LSD trip?

My mom and sister did one of these mail-away DNA tests to figure out some heretige and whatnot for fun. I opted not to, especially once {inappropriate language} the question, "don't you want to know what diseases you are prone to?". Nope, not for me.
Good luck and stand fast, true Patriots.

And of course your genetic info will always be in some database(s), which will be hacked, sold, made public, etc, etc. I agree with AA: NOPE.

Newborn babies in the United States are routinely screened for a panel of genetic diseases. Since the testing is mandated by the government, it's often done without the parents' consent, according to Brad Therrell, director of the National Newborn Screening & Genetics Resource Center.

In many states, such as Florida, where Isabel was born, babies' DNA is stored indefinitely, according to the resource center.

Many parents don't realize their baby's DNA is being stored in a government lab, but sometimes when they find out, as the Browns did, they take action. Parents in Texas, and Minnesota have filed lawsuits, and these parents' concerns are sparking a new debate about whether it's appropriate for a baby's genetic blueprint to be in the government's possession.

How convenient that, one day, the government will have the DNA profile of everyone born in this country. The smallest amount of DNA evidence at any crime scene will be sufficient to close the case - even if it is possible to sensibly explain why your DNA might be present.

I read something about a year ago, that the Fed's (FBI ?) were trying to access the genealogy databases .
Never heard what became of that fight.

If any of the fans who used one of these mouth swab kits on gameday are like me at a NFL game then they may find out that their ancestors were hops and barley.

I guess there was a security concern that this DNA collection would be accessible to others...so the State put the kie-bosh on it:
Ravens fans won’t be getting DNA kits at the home opener against the Browns, after all.

Fans attending Sunday’s game at M&T Bank Stadium were supposed to be able to submit a DNA sample by swabbing inside their cheeks and placing it in a bin at the stadium.

After the last few days. I believe the entire NFL needs a brain scan.
They are living proof that you can donate your brain to science and survive.

^ Yes. But so far only about 25% of the lads that play a game for a living are drinking the koolaid. Amazingly short sighted - viewership and game attendance are already way down, so let's do some more stunts that {inappropriate language} off the fans and advertisers that pay our undeserved salaries.

It seems to be getting even worse with the protests. And in London they'll stand for God Saves the Queen, but kneel for the Star-Spangled Banner. United Kingdomer's must be trying to lure the football players back to serve the Queen and forget that nasty little skirmish called the Revolutionary War.
