East Cleveland area question

Post by M-Quigley »

Not sure if this is the right forum or not, if not mods please move it. I may be traveling in the near future on I-90 and have to stop in the east Cleveland area. (hopefully as close to Willoughby as possible) Although I carry, I obviously would like to avoid needing to use it if possible. :) Does anyone know anything about the general high crime areas in East areas of Cleveland? I haven't been up there in many years. I have heard there are sections of east Cleveland and have more issues than others, just didn't know how far east this extends from the city center.

It's not nearly as bad as one would imagine - it's really the iron triangle: stupid people, stupid places, stupid times.

I would assume that you're not going to be with stupid people, and I would also assume that you won't be here during stupid times. :) I'm probably also safe in assuming that you're not going to be visiting any check-cashing places or payday loan places or Bitcoin vending, right? And that you're not in to visit a drug-den/shoot-house or to purchase illicit drugs. ;)

Then you'll be just fine.

It's just like any other city's inner ring. Pay attention to your instincts, they'll tell you if you should be in that area, or not.

East of Cleveland is not the same as East Cleveland. Willoughby should be fine. I'd estimate you have a 50/50 chance of leaving East Cleveland alive.

 Yes, the distinction should definitely be made.

That said, I'm in East Cleveland virtually every day. I'm in East Cleveland for lunch virtually every Tuesday.

I'm still alive.

It's like Chicago.
It's like Detroit.
It's like Baltimore.
It's like any other urban area.

Look at the details of the crimes, and ask yourself if you fit that profile: stupid time, stupid people, stupid places. Don't do those things, and you'll be just fine.

Crime can happen anywhere to anyone - don't do the things that make you a target. Driving a fancy car to do a Bitcoin transaction in a sketchy part of town is a clue to predators. So is coming out of the Apple or Microsoft Store (they sure do like to give out those nice bags, huh?) in a ritzy part of town, with your head buried in your cell phone. Being more aware when you're in a rough part of town isn't a bad thing, but this should not mean that you're oblivious when you're on home turf. How many times have we in this small community alone read posts by fellow members that start with: "I can't believe it happened so close to my home/business!"

If you're that worried, M-Quigley, why not detour that section altogether, or is there a specific event on your itinerary that demands you be in East Cleveland?

Willoughby is what I'm hoping for, will try to make reservations again tomorrow. My AAA travel agent could only find places that were either 300 a night, or in East Cleveland, not Willoughby. I later found out however that he didn't look at all motels and hotels, just certain ones. I'm going to try to make my own reservations tomorrow morning.

50/50? That good? :)

That's what concerned me. :) I've been to those three cities, don't care to go back anytime soon if I don't have to.

The time will be at night, just checking into a motel, not staying with any other people period, stupid or otherwise. Hopefully the motel isn't in a stupid place. Sometimes it's obvious it's not a good location, sometimes it's not.

To detour 90 would leave me with even less motel options than I have now, plus the time factor. East Cleveland just happens to be on the way to my destination, and there's possibly nothing closer to my destination when I happen to be going, than East Cleveland. I want to get as close to my destination as possible, but I can't pay 300 a night just for a local hotel when it's just going to be a place to sleep while heading on my way.

My only other option is taking my camper van to my destination, (I have a secure and guarded place there to park it) but the things a gas hog. To drive it would cost more than just taking my car and getting a cheap motel room. Also it's very old, and the wife is concerned about it breaking down up there so far from home. I have a little more confidence in it that she does, and it might add to the experience taking it, should I make it there and back. (although it wouldn't be as comfortable as a motel room, maybe safer though depending on where the motel is)

Does University Circle or Euclid put you too far out of the path?

University Circle is going to be booked-up for the next couple of weeks, I would bet, as undergrads at Case start classes. You'll likely want to book fast, if around the 28th is your target-date.

How about the Beachwood area?

Thanks for the info. I was able to find a place in Willoughby, not too far from 90.

Good stuff. Safe travels! :)

And yes, I used to take daily lunches in East Baltimore. I thought it was better than West. :P

Since you've been to those other cities, you've got your Spidey-sense well-tuned. Just listen to it, and you'll be just fine.

I just got back from the east side of Cleveland. My daughter is going to college at the CIA, and I helped her move in to her new apartment.

She and two other girls (all CIA students) share a three bedroom apartment at the corner of Mayfield Rd. and Belmar Rd. in Cleveland Heights. I noticed there were quite a few cars going up and down Belmar Rd. and quickly stopping at various houses on the road. What's the deal with that? It looks like a pretty shady neighborhood, so I am suspecting drug deals. Lovely. :(

Not sure. I haven't frequented that area for quite a while, now. A decade ago I used to have plenty of friends who lived in the area bordered by Mayfield, Coventry, Avondale, and Hillcrest, but I've gotten older, and so have our friends.

The Coventry area may look shady, but it's really not bad at all. There's small property crimes like any other college-town, but violent crime outside of an armed robbery (and we're not talking about Heat-levels of crimes, here, it's more the "I've got a knife [or gun - and who knows if it's real or just a toy], give me your cell phone" kind of thing that preys on unawares Dumbwalkers whose attention is completely devoted to the 4"-screen in front of their face as they amble down the sidewalk) is the truly exception rather than the rule, particularly those that involve average-citizenry (i.e. those who are not violating the "doing stupid things" portion of the above equation).

These days, though, that kind of traffic pattern could be anything. It's just as possible that it's some kind of App-driven food delivery service as it is stops for illicit substances. "Booty calls" are another possibility - the urban demographic youth is fond of this kind of fun, but given the area's population of undergraduate and graduate students, it's just as likely that it's rides for parties, with the driver/passengers trying to coordinate pickups via social media or SMS TEXT. :) Hell, even when I was in school, that was going on. But again, I've been out of that area for quite a while.

Congrats on your daughter starting at The Institute! :D

I'll ask my undergrad students what's up with that area, when they return from their GREs and home-visits on the week of the 21st. My grad student should be back in town this week, but I'm not sure if his net is as widely cast as that of the undergrads. I'll still ask, though.

Shoot me a PM with the info. Willoughby/Euclid is my stomping ground - maybe I can add something useful to your data on the area.

You are correct. Not 105th & Euclid-level 'hood, but not a good place. My wife grew up not far from there. I told here where this was --- she just shook her head.

Have a long talk with her about situational awareness. Lots can be prevented simply by not being distracted.

^ Ah, but that's the thing - how recently has she been back, or have had contact with friends/family who are still in that area?

Look at what's now "Uptown" in the area of Euclid/Ford/Mayfield/E115 has undergone a drastic transformation within the last 5 years. Similarly, look at the swing of the tide in the area around Severance Town Center and the Cedar Center shopping areas - the former over the course of the last 20 years, and the latter this past 10.

Uptown is a family atmosphere, now, particularly in daylight hours. Severance Town Center went from a ghost-town to a hang-out for Case (OK, "a" hang-out, singular - that IHOP  ) for grad and professional school kids, to now again somewhere that's less-than-stellar. Cedar Center supports Whole Foods and many trendy fast-food eats.

When I was at Case and friends lived in the Coventry area bordered by area bordered by Mayfield, Coventry, Avondale, and Hillcrest, we didn't think twice about walking to and from their apartments to the eats at Coventry or any neighboring parties. But then again, that was over a decade ago..... It's like my father-in-law being  that my wife, myself, and our friends at the IHOP at Severance or at that movie theater - what he remembered that area was like when he was in med school there was not what we saw, as the same med students, years down the line (of-course just a few years later that area would again go down to the dumps).
