Finding our dog a home

Post by jeep45238 »

Not sure if this is the right place- looks like it though. We need to find a new home for our dog. I'll miss him, but for him, my wife, and our marriage it's for the better. We're in SW Ohio, and I know this is a long shot.

We adopted a nurtured pittie/lab mix about a year and a half ago from an Army friend. Probably way to early for us, bit of a rush judgement, but he went from a loving home to a better loving home. He was in a large litter and was hand fed/raised, so has a natural love and attraction to most people. He however had next to no throttle with playing or affection because he missed out on dog-dog social learning. He spent his first year living in a kennel with no exercise and gained a lot of weight from well meaning but inattentive owners before we got him.

He's 2 now, going through the teenage years. He dropped from 80 pounds to a healthy 55, is kennel trained, rings a bell to go outside, hikes off leash, knows verbal and hand signals. The thing for him is we do air b'nb, so we constantly have new people in the house. This is a stressor, as he's be accustomed to always approach humans, even if he's not comfortable- and it's led to a few sketchy situations with growling in the house, sidewalk, and in the woods.

Due to this and his lack of throttle, he doesn't get to stay out when our parents come over to visit. Both of our moms are on the more fragile side, one from a nueroligical disorder that makes MS look like cake, one from surgeries. He jumps and tries to plow you over at first to say hello- which is cute sometimes, annoying or dangerous depending on other people and the situation. Dangerous as in falls or little ones getting knocked over on tile.

We want to find him a loving home that lives a dog who loves his people, and don't mind the quirks that he comes with. Someone who doesn't have a lot of people coming and going from the house would probably make his life easier- he loves most people, but has trouble getting surrounded and getting the 'such a cute puppy' death dive. If anybody is interested, please let me know.

His name is Wallace, and he's the brown dog in the pictures. The black dog is a friends.

He really bonds if that isn't evident from the photos. Last drill I was gone for two days, and it was like the videos of dogs greeting folks that have been deployed for 6-12 months. Jumped up chest/neck level and wound up in my arms like a barbell curl trying to lick my face off.

These are his previous owners, after being with us for 6 months. This is after 10 minutes and he had calmed down a bit.

Mind if I pass this along too a few people I know?

How is he with children? Early to late teens kind of kids.

How is he with other dogs or potentially cats?

That's a cute, loving doggie. I really wish we had room for another.

Please pass along. Our friend has a 10 year old that he gets along with, but he has a habit we've been trying to curb of jumping big time - when he calms down a moment he's great- big love sponge. He's met a cat once before, in a situation where everything was new and the homeowner was nervous; not sure how he'd do to be honest. With other dogs, he likes to play rough, but isn't an alpha at all- we boarded him with our trainer, whose dogs let him know to back off, and he was a different dog when we picked him up from that alone. I'm sure daily interactions with other dogs who've had the social skills will help calm him down a lot.

He rings the bell on the door to go outside and potty, and goes into his kennel when we tell him to. He places in a mat when we ask him where puppies go for dinner/breakfast, and knows verbal and hand commands for sit, stay, place, come. He walks well when he's already pooped, and you can get his attention. We have done work with him using an ecollar, and he accepts it being put on in the morning when I let him out of his kennel.

We have all medical records going back to his birth basically, and a kennel large enough for 2 medium dogs with toys, a coat, anti-flea/tick shampoo/meds, etc.

^ Oh, heaven. :)

I've copy-pasted everything here to a Word file, and will pass it along at work. A lot of dog-lovers who will make the drive...I don't know if they are looking/ready, but it can't hurt!

I love the first pic... I'd love to help but I have an Alpha who barely tolerates her son. She's old but has been a good and faithful servant and I don't want her spirit broken at this late date and she tries to rise to any and all challenges.

We've been looking and waiting to find the perfect people for him, and we think the universe just provided somehow.

We found Wallace some amazing people to be his furever home - 11C OEF vet and his wife, she works medical, he works the rail road as a conductor. They're high energy people with a german Shepard who are finishing up building a house on 3 acres outside of town, have been wanting to adopt/save a bullie breed from a shelter, know the name of every dog at the dog park, and Wallace just meshed with them so well (we didn't plan on meeting- Wallace went to them and they waited around to talk with me).
