Railroad spike knives and other goodies!

Post by Adelphos »

Hello I am currently blacksmithing from home and selling my wares on the internet. I currently specialize in railroad spike knives and hooks for countless uses. I hammer them by hand in a coal forge. I wrap the handles in leather or paracord in various colors as well as a twisted handle. Knives are $35.00 each. You can find my items here http://hammerdownforge.com and here https://www.etsy.com/shop/HammerDown?ref=si_shop

And if I could figure out how to post pictures I would, but I do have them on my sites.

Thanks for looking,

Kieran

Wow, those look awesome! How hard is the steel, and how well do they hold an edge?

Thank you for your interest! The steel is pretty hard for what it is, and are very sharp as well. I have had many people email me saying they use as a everyday carry and were happy. When they get dull they sharpen easily I use DMT diamond stones but I'm sure any stones work. Now this isn't high performance knife steel but again for being a spike it does very well. If you have anymore questions please let me know.

Do you offer a sheath for the knife?

Nice looking knives!
I have a custom made knife from a railroad spike that is signed and numbered. It has a stag handle and I use it for field dressing deer. It holds a razor sharp edge and sharpens easily. The only issue is they tend to rust quickly if left unattended. I always coat mine with gun grease before storing away for the year.

I am looking for another one and like what I see on your webpage.

Your right about the rust that's why I coat the handles to help prevent it and either use gun lube or mineral oil depending on the intended use.

They also form a nice patina over a few months with use. Which also protects from the ravages of rust.

Boiled Linseed Oil is another permanent way to protect from rust.
