Where are you taking the class?
The class we took tested on the NRA Basic Pistol book, and it was open book. I think this is standard, but the experts will know more.

The class I teach is an NRA based class, and the test is open book using the textbook for the class.

Re: Ohio CCW Test?
I was told by my instructor that the test(s) is/are open book by law (I haven't looked since I didn't feel like arguing ). When I met with him to register he gave me all the materials (the NRA books, AG's handbook, etc.) PLUS the actual tests. Said if I passed them at home I didn't need to take them again. Most of the questions were common sense or were able to be found easily. I ended up getting 74/75 combined.
The course he taught was the NRA basic pistol course (plus the bits Ohio law requires) and had two NRA tests (one pistol and I think the other was safety). If you're in the Cleveland area PM me and I will send you the guy's information.

Though I do have Progressive insurance, IANAL and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. This is my $.02; remember you paid less than that for it.

Re: Ohio CCW Test?
It appears we all give the test to our students differently. I have trained a number of individuals who have not been familiar with firearms - each has passed the written test.
The important part of the training exercise is, in my opinion, the safety aspect, including, but not limited to the range portion. Read the printed materials, and participate in class. Ask all the "what if..." questions on your mind. Take notes for future reference. Enjoy, learn and above all, be safe.

ummmm... I don't recall the NRA Basic Pistol couse being open book either by design or by law - you may want to contact your training counselor for clarification.
WOW after reading your posts again, I am pretty stringent in my class and testing - I have not had anybody fail yet (one person came close, he got an 81), but nothing is open book?

TIP: If you do take an open book test, USE THE INDEX rather than just thumbing through the book repeatedly. Worked well for me (100%).

Re: Ohio CCW Test?
There is no Ohio standard test.
There is an OPOTA approved, recommended shooting test.
The NRA Basic Pistol exam is designed as a learning tool, a component of Total Participant Involvement (TPI), a type of hands on learning approach.
NRA Basic Pistol Class is legally sufficient, with two additional hours of instruction, totalling 12, for issuance of a CHL in Ohio.
It is not concealed carry training. Your instructor needs to add that.
NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home is a better course and meets Ohio's requirements without modification.

Re: Ohio CCW Test?
My training counselor is also my CCW instructor. When I took my CCW class it was open book. I also teach my class that way, and take the time to discuss any questions that were missed so I am sure my students understand the material. I am also willing to take the extra time to make sure my students know the material and pass the test. They are paying for the class, so it is my duty to make sure they understand the material. They will pass the test before they get their certificate.OldManTod wrote:ummmm... I believe that anyone with the proper mind set can be taught, so the only way a student can fail my class is:
1) Physical limitations that prevent them from being able to handle a firearm safely. I will also work with these people in every way I can to find out how they can correct this. If I cannot help them with this I will refund their money and try to help them find someone who can help them.
2) Bad attitude. IE act like they want to go and shoot someone.
3)Repeated safety violations, such as sweeping other students or myself with the muzzle after being corrected repeatedly. I will not pass someone whom I believe is going to shoot someone accidentally from being careless.
I am still new at teaching the class, but I use my experiences from the years I have owned firearms, and incorporate them into the class as real world examples. I want my students to have fun, be safe, and most importantly be able to protect themselves.

OPOTA has no real standing to "approve" anything, or rather their "approval" carries exactly as much weight as anybody else's approval .Shadow wrote:There is no Ohio standard test.

The rub with using PPOTH(Personal Protection Outside the Home) is that there are prerequisites required to take the class. According to the NRA webpage the skills learned in Personal Protection in the home are required to take Personal Protection outside the home, and the skills learned in First Steps Pistol or Basic Pistol are required to take Personal Protection in the Home(the NRA trainers guide for PPITH states this clearly).
Thus PPOTH is not a standalone class (neither is PPITH in many cases), it also requires a much more comprehensive firing range facility to run a class, and the class itself is 14 hours long with 5 hours range time, AND it would also require the addition of a review of the Ohio AG booklet on CHL.
Ohio CHL law was IMHO purposefully written to allow the use of NRA Basic Pistol instruction, and no other NRA standalone class can advance a student from "never touched a gun in my life" to the level which they graduate from the class.....I have seen such people successfully complete the class and when they left they were capable of safely defending themselves with a handgun within the confines of their own home, or at distances similar. This makes Basic Pistol an extremely valuable course IMHO.
