A group of nuns was successful Wednesday in persuading Sturm, Ruger & Co. shareholders to require the firearms manufacturer to issue a risk report on its products by Feb. 9.

The Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary of Marylhurst, Ore., submitted a “gun safety” shareholder proposal.

The proposal requires the Ruger board of directors to report “on its activities related to safety measures and mitigation of harm associated with company products.” Ruger later received identical proposals from other shareholders.

The proposals also asked for an update on where Ruger is on developing “smart guns that could significantly reduce accidental shootings and suicides.”

The nuns requested a report on three main categories: evidence of monitoring of violent events associated with products produced by the company; efforts underway to research and produce safer guns and gun products; and assessment of the corporate reputation and financial risks related to gun violence in the U.S.

In recommending against the proposal, the Ruger board said that while it “does not condone violence involving the misuse of firearms, we believe that the intentional criminal misuse of firearms is beyond our control.”

“Existing laws, if properly enforced, are sufficient to address the public health crisis of gun violence which, first and foremost, is a law enforcement issue,” the board said.

When it came to the issue of smart guns, the board said that “despite assertions to the contrary, effective ‘smart gun’ technology does not exist. Those devices advanced thus far have proven unreliable, easily defeated, or both.”
Really?
We're calling for enforcement of the thousands of unconstitutional laws we decry? And we're agreeing that there's some "CRISIS" of gun violence? Stopped short of going into mental health, but, wow...this is the wrong way to uphold RKBA!

"...does not condone violence involving the misuse of firearms..."? Huh? Like negligent discharges? Who condones that or calls it violence? Now misuse is malicious? Firearms are instruments of violence. Get over yourselves.
Somebody please help me parse this corporate-speak...I get the next part of that sentence "we believe that the intentional criminal misuse of firearms is beyond our control", but can't comprehend what they are aiming at distancing themselves from on the front half of that thought...

The Ruger board needs to find it's mettle quick, fast, and in a hurry.
