A well reasoned editorial, unlike the nonsense you read at the NYT or the LA times.

Detroit is a bit of a unicorn when it comes to gun rights. As one would expect the city, and in particular the inner city leans unapologetically (D). The good folks who have the misfortune of being unable to leave Detroit have become rather pragmatic when it comes to guns though. Crime and home invasions have risen unchecked and violence against the elderly and other vulnerable citizens is out of control. The government has been going through bankruptcy both figuratively and literally. Entire neighborhoods of vacant properties are being razed and turned into farmland - IN A MAJOR CITY, but there's not enough money to raze all the properties that need taken down. Hiring more cops is out of the question.

"In Michigan there was a 25 percent increase in concealed pistol licenses from December 2016 to February this year, according to Michigan State Police data" While it would be nice to know what that percentage is in Wayne County, the fact of the matter is the Detroit papers and other news outlets have run a good number of stories concerning law abiding residents getting their CPLs because they realize they are on their own. At one point the police chief was even advocating that they do so.

For years government has failed the citizens of Detroit in very personal and spectacular ways. It's just now that privileged white people in tropical paradises are starting to see what government failure looks like but they still trust government to have the answers.
