Ohio school shooting victim receives detention for protest

HAMILTON, Ohio — An Ohio student who was one of two shot when a classmate opened fire in a school cafeteria has received detention for participating in a mass student walkout over gun violence.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports 16-year-old Cooper Caffrey and 42 other students walked out of Madison High School as part of the March 14 protests. Each has received detention.
This is the part I don't understand. Perhaps someone who followed the protests more closely knows the answer. I thought the student protests in general were about promoting gun control and opposing armed teachers, not opposing SRO's.
Madison school board President David French said Monday students who participated in the protest should apologize to school resource officers.

Good. Every every single student who walked out should receive whatever punishment is on the books for walking out of a classroom/school during school hours.

If they want to protest then let them do it on their own time. During school hours they need to be behind a desk learning.

As far as the apology to the SRO? Yeah, unless there is more to that part of the story than we are being told, that is just stupid.

I've found additional information that sheds some light on the SRO statement, gives what exactly happened in greater detail. I'm inferring that it wasn't just a matter of quelling a protest, but having kids bunched up outside might've been a safety concern if someone had been outside shooting at them. That was the concern of some other school administers on March 14th, and they had to call in extra security.

But Cooper’s dad is fine with what the school did.

Marty Caffrey understands school officials were put in a tough position, worried about safety, and will always be grateful for how they helped his son in the aftermath of the shooting.

“The whole purpose of a walkout is to protest against an establishment,” he wrote on Facebook. “I do not expect the establishment to support the walkout.”

Without punishment, he told The Enquirer, it would have been meaningless.
On the morning of March 14, Cooper kissed his dad on the cheek and got out of the car without a word.

Inside, the high school principal made an announcement to all students about the significance of why some were wearing the Florida school’s colors.

He also told students they would be punished for any activity that disrupts the school day.

Cooper was {inappropriate language}, he texted his dad, because they were telling him what to do. And {inappropriate language} because he cared.

Later that morning, he and 42 other students walked outside into the school’s courtyard. This is where officials shepherded them because they felt the front of the building would be too dangerous.

But the students tried to get to the front flagpole anyway, as school resource officers commanded them to stop. They made it to the side of the building, where administrators finally corralled them.

Dad has the right attitude. Good for him.
