Roy Moore gets pro gun endorsement in Senate Race (AL)

Post by bignflnut »

Roy Moore picked up the endorsement of the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) in his bid to unseat Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) in Alabama’s primary run-off.

Strange represents the establishment wing of the GOP, led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), while Moore is considered to operate on non-establishment principles. The the non-establishment qualities are what NAGR likes about Moore.

AL.com quoted NAGR director Dudley Brown saying, “Judge Roy Moore has proven to be a strict constitutionalist and has given good reason to believe he’ll be a gun rights champion and vocal supporter of the Second Amendment in the U.S. Senate.” Brown added, “[Moore] opposes expanded Brady Registration checks, calling them a national gun registration. He is also a steadfast opponent of high capacity gun magazine bans and bans on so-called ‘assault weapons.'”

Brown also stressed that Moore will not simply be a defensive player in the Senate but will push to expand the exercise of Second Amendment rights as well. He said, “In this new political landscape, Moore will defend against anti-gun legislation, but also go on the offensive and roll back unconstitutional gun control laws.”
Sounds like an ally. Let's note who opposes him. They would not be allies.

“I believe that we should have national reciprocity and I also believe that we should vote on these things,” Moore said in an exclusive interview over lunch with Breitbart News before Labor Day here in Montgomery. “You eliminate the filibuster and we’re going to find out where people stand. Right now, you don’t know where people stand. They get NRA endorsements and then hide behind a rule that allows our right to keep and bear arms to be violated, and I think that’s a problem with the rule. Again, what I think we should do is remove that rule and then vote on these issues. I stand firmly with Gun Owners of America which has endorsed me, and BamaCarry right here in Alabama which has endorsed me. I support the right to keep and bear arms and hopefully my wife is keeping her weapon in her purse right now.”
You might be asking yourself, who is opposing this gent?
Technically, the NRA has endorsed Moore’s opponent, the failing establishment-backed candidate Luther Strange. Strange is failing to gain any significant traction in the race after the Aug. 15 runoff, as Moore has a skyrocketing lead over Strange by more than double digits in most polls.

Strange is backed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his affiliated organization Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), which is running millions of dollars of attack ads against him that have not been working per the recent polls. Strange’s decision to accept help from SLF, which is run by Karl Rove acolyte Steven Law, and his decision to hire Karl Rove’s ex-chief of staff onto his campaign are viewed by President Donald Trump, White House sources tell Breitbart News, as an insult. Strange’s association with Rove’s brood of GOP consultants has so insulted President Trump, sources close to the president say, that he has withheld support for Strange in the second round of voting ahead of the Sept. 26 GOP primary runoff.
Palin is headed to Bama to help the campaign:
Palin plans to barnstorm Alabama the week prior to the special election to double down on her strongly stated support of Judge Moore,” a source familiar with the former Alaska Governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee’s planning told Breitbart News.

“Gov. Palin is a conservative rock star and her presence in Alabama is sure to seal the deal for Judge Roy Moore,” said a second source familiar with Palin’s plans.

While details are still being hammered out and are expected to be announced soon, the event is going to happen and will likely take place late next week.
What an odd couple McCain/Palin was...

President Donald Trump announced on Twitter Saturday night that he plans to campaign for Luther Strange in Alabama, a seriously risky move that has little to no upside for the struggling president.

SNIP

So, counting polling and endorsements from candidates who already ran, Moore is in the driver’s seat in Alabama. How Strange plans to flip what is essentially a 30-point race—65.5 percent between him and his top-two in-state endorsements to Strange’s low 30s in polling and election results in the first round—is anybody’s guess. A Trump rally is unlikely to turn the tide enough for Strange to flip this upside down, and crawl back into the race.

Trump’s risky move also pits him against his own base, most of whom have endorsed Moore. Sean Hannity, the Fox News anchor and nationally syndicated radio host, has endorsed Moore. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, the father of White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is supporting Moore, as is the staunchly pro-Trump House Freedom Caucus chairman Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC). Most of Trump’s in-state supporters in Alabama are on Moore’s team, like state Rep. Ed Henry—who was a co-chair of Trump’s Alabama campaign.

SNIP

The president is also campaigning against his own agenda. Earlier this year, the Trump White House officially endorsed the RAISE Act—an immigration bill from Sens. Tom Cotton (R-AR) and David Perdue (R-GA) that would cut legal immigration levels to the United States in half each year. Moore supports the legislation, but Strange refuses to at this time. Moore also supports the president on the Second Amendment and on education policy, as well as trade policy, something Strange refuses to do on each of those things and more.
Uh Oh...Doesn't look good for the "Drain the Swamp" crowd...

According to a report from Politico’s Matthew Nussbaum and Daniel Strauss, Vice President Mike Pence will be making his way to Alabama to campaign for Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) next week.

Politico, citing “a senior administration official and two top political operatives,” reported Pence will be in Alabama next Monday. That is the day before Strange faces former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore in a runoff for the Republican Party’s nod for the special election being held to fill the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by Jeff Sessions.
Seems like a great deal of effort to keep Moore away from a primary victory.

We'll see how Swampy Strange does on Tuesday.

Luther Strange spent much of his time during a debate with Judge Roy Moore Thursday evening touting what he called his “close, personal friendship” with President Donald Trump, who has endorsed his candidacy for the U.S. Senate.

During the Lincoln-Douglas-style debate, Strange referred some 28 times to the fact that Trump endorsed him over Moore.

“The first question is, who does the president support? The president supports me,” Strange started from the outset of the debate.

“The president of the United States will take time out of his schedule – with all the things going on in the world today, to come to Huntsville tomorrow afternoon and campaign for me,” Strange touted, boasting his “close, personal friendship” with Trump.
Here's a link to the debate...sounds like a sloberknocker

In the first two minutes, he said the above, running behind Trump's coattails...

You gotta watch the first 9:30 of this...just the opening statements...different styles, different men. Swamp v America.

At a post-debate rally in Montgomery, Alabama, Thursday evening, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) delivered a resounding endorsement of former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore for U.S. Senate. Gohmert strongly implied President Donald Trump endorsed opponent Sen. Luther Strange based on “bad advice.”

“I’m here because I’ve been in the swamp, I have seen what goes on, and we desperately need a man like Roy Moore to help us get that swamp drained,” Gohmert said as the first of the evening’s headliners before the energized Moore crowd.
CAN. NOT. BE. BOUGHT.

It's easy to say that Tuesday's primary sets the tone for the future of the national GOP, etc.
It doesn't. It just proves whether or not Alabama is easily duped by flashy lobbyists and national figures.
These primary battles are going to strengthen or weaken the MAGA agenda. The reddest of states may see more primary challenges, as Bannon predicted in his 60 minutes interview...

A Trump campaign “robocall” promoting Sen. Luther Strange’s (R-AL) campaign rally with President Donald Trump Friday does not even mention the senator’s name, according to a report by Huntsville ABC affiliate WAAY.

SNIP

The apparent snub to Strange comes after White House sources expressed concerns this week that attendance for the rally will fall well short of what Trump came to expect in the Yellowhammer State during the 2016 campaign. The same sources identified lackluster support for Strange as a possible damper on crowd size, suggesting the robocalls omitting Strange may be an attempt to conceal from Trump supporters the purpose of the rally so they might attend.

“We have concerns that there may not be a high amount of turnout at the rallies for Strange, and we are concerned that some of those that may show up may be there to shout pro-Roy Moore slogans–or that they just want to see the president and vice president but still plan to vote for Roy Moore,” a White House aide told Breitbart News. “Translating this into votes for Luther Strange is going to be very difficult, if not impossible.”

On at least one occasion in 2016, the Madison rally in February, Trump claimed a crowd of more than 30,000.

Friday’s rally with Strange will be held at Huntsville’s 9,000-seat Von Braun Center.

“We have to be loyal in life,” Trump said. “There is something called loyalty, and I might have made a mistake and I’ll be honest, I might have made a mistake.”

He noted Strange’s significant lead in the polls, and that the media would cast it as an “embarrassment” for Trump if he were unable to pull his candidate over the line.

In another blow for Strange, Trump mulled the possibility of a Moore victory and said he would campaign for Moore, as well, if he were to win the primary.

“By the way, both good men and you know what, I told Luther … if his opponent wins, I’m going to be here campaigning like hell for him,” he said to applause from the crowd, although he later argued that while he believed Strange could win the general election, Moore could not.
Here's the video of him saying it... with endorsements like that...how can Strange lose?
U.S. Chamber of Commerce political strategist Scott Reed told the New York Times Saturday that it was important to defeat Judge Roy Moore in the Republican runoff for U.S. Senate in Alabama on Tuesday to rebuke former White House adviser and Breitbart News executive chairman Steve Bannon.

Reed, who is described by the Times‘ Jonathan Martin as “working with business leaders here to turn out votes for Mr. Strange,” said that a victory for appointed incumbent Sen. Luther Strange “would remind Bannon who’s in charge, and I think give the president and the governing wing of the party momentum. He added: “That’s why we’re going all in to shut it down now.”

With Strange on the ropes and time running out, the party has launched a coordinated, scorched-earth campaign to take down Moore. The sheer breadth of the anti-Moore campaign has stunned Alabama’s political class: It includes non-stop TV ads, a meticulously-crafted get-out-the-vote effort, and detailed, oppo-research-filled debate prep sessions for Strange.

Moore, a 70-year-old former state Supreme Court chief justice who rose to national fame after refusing a federal order to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments from a judicial building, is a staunch social conservative who has called for McConnell’s ouster and lambasted Republican leadership. If he comes out ahead on Tuesday, mainstream Republicans worry it would instigate a broader offensive by the activist right to unseat other GOP incumbents in the 2018 midterms.

"Winning here means we'll be able to focus our energy on defeating Democrats next year, instead of fighting useless and divisive intra-party battles," said Steven Law, a former McConnell chief of staff who serves as president and CEO of the Senate Leadership Fund, which has spent millions of dollars in Alabama.

SNIP

Much of the assault has played out on the air. During the final week of the contest, a trifecta of pro-Strange GOP groups — the Senate Leadership Fund, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and National Rifle Association — flooded the state with about $2.5 million in TV and radio ads. The barrage against the underfunded Moore went straight at his character: One Senate Leadership Fund spot portrayed Moore as a lifelong politician who had used his prominence as a former judge to cash in for himself.

Through the end of the weekend, Moore was confronting a nearly five-to-one spending deficit on the airwaves, according to media buying totals provided to POLITICO.

“This will certainly end up being the most expensive race in state history,” said Alex Schriver, a Washington-based Republican strategist who has deep experience in Alabama.

SNIP

The NRA, which has a large constituency in the Deep South state, contacted its members and urged them to turn out for Strange while describing Moore as unreliable on gun rights. The group sent out fliers telling them not to “waste” their vote on Moore.

“Roy Moore doesn’t fully support your gun rights,” said the flier. “We can’t take a chance on electing Roy Moore to the U.S. Senate.”

The party has been racing to corrode Moore’s base of support, a task party strategists concede has been challenging given his long history on the state’s political scene. One region of focus has been the Huntsville area in the northern part of the state, which Moore is hoping to perform well in given his support from the local conservative congressman, Mo Brooks. The Chamber of Commerce bought billboards along a stretch of highways surrounding Huntsville touting Trump's support for Strange.

SNIP

Moore’s side is gearing up, too. Palin, the GOP’s 2008 vice presidential nominee, has cut a robocall that's expected to go out to voters starting Monday. And that evening, former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, who has broken with Trump in the race, will join “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson and Brexit leader Nigel Farage for what is expected to be a raucous pro-Moore rally in Fairhope, Alabama.

Bannon, whose Breitbart website has been aggressively attacking Strange, is slated to appear on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program live from the rally and is also expected to host episodes of Breitbart radio from Alabama.

The ex-White House adviser has spent weeks rallying conservatives to get behind Moore. Bannon has described the race as the first front in a midterm civil war that will pit the establishment and movement wings of the party.
I'm so jazzed to see the Hannity Bannon interview...will post mañana.

Here's the promised Bannon Interview

Here's the candidate, Judge Moore, doing something you haven't seen any candidate do before, while professing a stance on the 2nd Amendment.
He referenced ads that “were completely false,” like the one that claimed he does not “believe in the Second Amendment.” He then reached into his pocket, pulled out a concealed carry handgun, held it up high and said, “I believe in the Second Amendment.” The crowd went wild.

Moore added, “You know, they say that guns are bad; that they kill people. Well I know a lot about guns–I’m the one that used guns in combat. I know what guns do…[But] guns don’t kill, people kill. [You could say] cars kill, are we going to get rid of our cars? Are we going to get rid of our knives? No. We’ve got to bring morality back to our country.”

The applause of the crowd hit a crescendo as Moore added, “We’ve got to uphold the Second Amendment.”

Muzzle orientation could have been better but he appeared to keep well away from the trigger. Were I in that position and wanted to make a similar statement, pulling back my suit jacket to reveal a well-used belt rig would get the point across better, maybe.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

Whoa: Roy Moore 57, Luther Strange 41 in new Alabama GOP Senate poll

Yes, this poll was conducted over the weekend, after Trump’s rally for Strange on Friday night. And yes, the pollster is legit. It’s Trafalgar, whom you may remember as having called Michigan and Pennsylvania last fall with eerie precision when most others in the field were projecting Hillary Clinton wins by comfortable-ish margins.

SNIP

Moore’s being outspent on TV five to one, per Politico, and still cruising. The only hopeful note for the White House in that report is that the race is tightening … but what if that isn’t true? What if it’s nonsense being pushed by the party to give Strange supporters in Alabama reason to turn out tomorrow instead of giving up hope and staying home?

Does this look like a race that’s tightening?
Three new polls in #ALSen all have Moore up big over Strange.

– @cygnal: Moore +11
– @trafalgar_group: Moore +16
– @Be0ptimus: Moore +11

— Alex Seitz-Wald (@aseitzwald) September 25, 2017
On Friday, the day of Trump’s Alabama rally for Strange, Moore led the race by 8.6 points in the RCP average. Today he leads by 10 points even.

Whoever wins the primary will advance to the December 12 special election to face Jones -- who has the backing of former Vice President Joe Biden. Biden is planning to visit Alabama on October 3 to campaign with Jones.
Sounds like the seat carries a term through Jan 2021...so the winner gets 3 years or so
