Ohioans for Concealed Carry and the West Virginia Citizens Defense League will be cooperating on a research project and we need your help. The goal is to find as many examples as we can of incidents where law abiding citizens used a semi-automatic long gun for defensive purposes.

We need the help of any OFCCer willing to spend some time looking for such examples. I propose that we post replies to this thread when we find such examples, with a brief description of the incident, which might help avoid some duplication. If you have source material, PM that to me.

Obviously, the search engines are one source, searches of on-line newspaper archives might be another, and if anyone keeps their copies of the NRA magazines, that could be a source as well. Some of you may have actual academic research-fu. Scholarly articles might be another place to look for citations to past studies.

This is an important project and we need as many people looking as we can get. Any spare time you might have, perhaps you could do some digging. I am certain that between the two organizations and their members we will find what we're looking for.

Dave

Is there a limit as to how far back the incident was?

No. As a practical matter, the Henry and Spencer repeating rifles are probably the first "high-capacity" long guns to come in to common use. Obviously, the semi-automatic guns are of most interest though.

The problem is that a justified use of such a firearm in self-defense will not show up on court dockets, and the news media is loath to report such incidents ... not policitically correct and all.

One thing we probably need is folks who "know about" or "heard about" such an incident. If there are enough details - particularly time and place - it is likely that public records requests could be made for police reports.

my search-fu on here is all messed up...cant find what i was looking for. Wasnt there a member here who posted about someone breaking in to his home, or he came home and there was someone already there, and he used his AR defensively?

I hope you are contacting the NRA, since they collect self defense incidents for their "Armed Citizen" column.

The biggest problem is that most hot links for stories are dead after a short while. We might need to do some digging for source material. For example, this one:
A masked and gloved gunman was killed late Wednesday night during a home invasion robbery at an apartment in the Brentridge complex on Bell Road.

South Precinct detectives say that Michael Shane Martin, 35, knocked on the door of the apartment that Michael Moffitt, 29, shares with his girlfriend, Caycee Albright, 26. When the couple looked out of the peephole, it was covered from the outside. Moffitt directed Albright to the bedroom and told her to call police. Moffitt, who is a firearms enthusiast and had legal weapons in the apartment, retrieved an AR-15 rifle and again checked the peephole. Seeing that it was no longer covered, Moffitt opened the door. At that point, Martin, armed with a semi-automatic pistol, forced his way in and shoved Moffitt hard into an interior wall...
The link to the story is dead. Maybe we can dig something up.

That's when Gabbard said he had money hidden nearby, but instead of grabbing money he grabbed a weapon, a SKS semi-automatic rifle, and started firing.

How about a statement from an officer who was involved in an incident where a citizen armed with an AR15 just stepped outside and calmed the situation. The citizen didn't want paper done on the incident, there was really no reason to other than to put him in for one of those citizen award things, which he declined.

(Hint: I'm the officer)

Investigators said Michael Moffitt and his girlfriend, Caycee Albright, heard a knock at their door around 11 p.m. and Moffitt found the door peephole was covered. He told Albright to call police while he got an AR-15 rifle and opened the door once he saw it was uncovered.

Police said Martin charged in with a semi-automatic pistol and wearing a mask and gloves. Moffitt was shoved into an interior wall and opened fired, killing Martin.

I can't locate the story about now-Congressman Brad Wenstrup detaining some unruly yutes up in Indian Hill a couple years ago with an AR-15 variant. Almost like it never happened--but it did. Hopefully somebody with better navigating skills can drag it up from the Interdepths.
