KAPLAN, Louisiana After guiding his skiff through the marshes of Vermilion Parish as the sun rose in southern Louisiana, Raywood Stelly spotted his prey.
A seven-foot, or two-meter, alligator, lured from the muddy embankment, gnawed on putrid meat offered on a hook. Stelly drew his handgun and shot the alligator in the back of its head.
"He's a pretty one, not too scarred or nothing," Stelly, 57, said as the alligator continued to squirm after being lifted into the boat. "Some of them sometimes got more spirit than others," he said, shooting the alligator a second time with his .22 Magnum revolver.
Hurricane Katrina flooded New Orleans and killed hundreds of people across the Gulf Coast region, while leaving a million others at least temporarily homeless. But where Louisiana's alligators are concerned, the hunt must go on.
