Just watched several Sharpe's Rifles episodes. Not bad, overall. British Army during Napoleanic Wars. He's part of a rifle corps.

His method of loading: bite off a bit of the cartridge paper, pore a bit of powder on the pan, put the rest of the powder down the barrel--Oh, I forgot, when you bite off the paper, you're supposed to get the bullet into your mouth--now SPIT the bullet down the barrel, throw away the paper, and gently tap the stock on the ground to get the bullet down.

Theory is, you can shoot 3 shots a minute.

I told Ted this method. He said it won't build up enough pressure without the paper wadding, and once it is fired, it will be too dirty for a properly sized bullet to get down the barrel without a ramrod.

But it sounds downright impressive to spit the bullet down the muzzle, and tap the stock.

Mustang380gal,

I don't know about the movies, but they used the paper the powder came in for the "wadding", they did not just throw it away. Waste not, want not!

I know--Ted told me that they put the whole paper cartridge (powder and bullet) into the muzzle after some powder was put on the pan.

Only semi-automatic handguns can leave micro-stamps: Revolvers cannot because their bullets have no shell casings.

Looks to be a paintball gun? Maybe some kind of riot gun that uses compressed air?

NCIS episode a couple weeks ago. Victim was killed by frangible bullets. But - but - according to the script no firearms will fire frangible bullets without being so close to the victim without leaving powder burns.

Looks like a paintball gun to me. My impression is it looks like one to the fellow holding it, too. His expression seems to be one of, "What the... What do expect me to do with this thing?!?!"

It's a pepper ball gun. Most recently featured on Tactical Arms in '09 episode called "Less than Lethal" IIRC.

Law & Order- Special Victims Unit last week- the episode centered on child pornography and how a girl was forced to make porn movies as a girl, turns out the perp had continued to make the movies for like 20 years or something.

Anyway, as per usual in L&O, the victim and the prosecutors try everything to bust the sleazeball including some truly stupid court tactics and he finally walks with no way to get him. For like the 3rd or 4th time. Scene changes to the SVU duty room and Stabler is talking about the case and how terrible it is the victim can't get justice... when the phone rings... seems the sleazeball called 911 for a woman with a gun. They rush over there and Whoah! The victim has somehow in New York City come up with a gun like in an hour and killed the sleazeball. Turns out the sleaze had another young girl in the bathtub for immoral purposes and she was saved by the shooter.

OK, first thing, I think L&O has used this probably about thirty times in the life of the series. Victim driven past human suffering gets a gun and kills the bad guy. According to L&O, in NYC every gun is registered and you can't get guns HOWEVER it seems somehow magically every innocent victim has a speed dial number to the black market gun sellers.

OK, this episode then continues- the Assistant District Attorney and the detectives are on the scene as the rapidly cooling bad guy is hauled off in a zipper bag. The detectives ask what will happen to the innocent victim turned shooter- who is wandering around the crime scene and outside the ambulance! The ADA sort of sadly but also sort of happily says that she used deadly force to defend the innocent girl, so she is free to go.

Really?

Ya know, I thought that every homicide had to be investigated and presented to a grand jury. Seriously, in NY-Effing-City, they don't cuff up the shooter and detain pending investigation? No grand jury? Really?

Another show my wife likes is Bones... Probably because that David Boreanitz is Teh Hotttness back from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer days. Anyway, I can't watch BONES any more because they had so many darn stupid points of science... episode the worst was the one where a pickup truck with scrap magnesium burnt up somehow. The driver is melted into the dashboard??? But the pavement under the burnt truck is pristine. The lead bullet in the gun is unmelted. Et cetera. Plus lots of problems, like Alan already mentioned. They are common.

CSI of whichever city was just as bad as Bones Totally stupid science and generally WRONG info.

They ended the show called NUM3ERS last year. That featured the FBI heavily in it. You know, the academic agents are the first to kick in every door, thumb-cocking their Glocks and racking slides before they search?

And then there's Criminal Minds Wow, yet another show that seems to have stupidity embedded deep.

The episode last week, a crazy woman greiving the loss of her son walks into a gun store. Asks to see a 38 revolver (because she already has 38 ammo at home). Clerk hands her a 2.5" Smith 66 with Hogues and explains it will have 'low recoil'. Then he asks for her gun purchase permit (Florida needs gun permits? NOT!!!) and she can't come up with one, of course. So the clerk tells her there is also a 3-day waiting period (which is true.) Then he hands her a 4473 to fill out, leaves the gun on the counter, and then walks to the other side of the store to help someone else. Well, crazy woman loads up the Smith with a handful of rounds she had in her pocket and walk out with it, the clerk sees her, yells HEY YOU, STOP! and starts to draw a .45 OWB on his belt.

Well, crazy lady turns out to have been Annie Oakley. From across the gun store she shoots the gun clerk one time. Instant dead right there. There are three customers in the store, all carrying and drawing and/or reacting to the shot. One shot for each of them, all of them dead. Then she walks out of the store.

So, suburban mom, crazy lady, takes out a store full of people with single shots from a revolver she just picked up for the first time. Then she kills a security guard, shoots a cop, shoots at some EMTs... and the FBI is trying to trace owners of registered 38's (since she had 38 ammo already- they knew this because she dropped a couple while loading up in the gun shop and "All the ammo was still locked up in the gun store since they had just opened" according to the FBI geeks).

So the FBI computer person is told to trace for all registered .38 revolver owners... (no registration in Florida, nice try) but the computer person rattles off this spiel that "In 2008 Floridians were worried about their gun rights so a lot of stuff got left off the record, they are really behind on registrations and a lot of stuff fell through the cracks."

When watching shows like this Mrs Price has learned that sudden eruptions of vitriol are to be expected. I find that she often no longer invites me to watch these shows if I am otherwise occupied... :)

SVU prominently shows a sticker on the side of one of the desks in just about every episode "Gun Busters 1-800-XXX-XXXX" I believe it's a real number. Mariska Hargitay did a gun's are bad yada yada, are guns present at your childs friends house bla bla PSA several years back as well.

This show and all the other LAO shows have turned into Quincyesq liberal platforms with a weekly slam on something that needs fixed, usually a liberty used by a gone beserk nut in some way.

OK, it took me a while but I found the straight skinny on this:
Image
1. It's definitely NOT a machine gun. However, they can only be acquired through a Class 3 FFL.
2. It's not a pepperball gun. It's not to be found here: http://www.pepperball.com/

What it is, is an FN303: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_303
The FN 303 is a semi-automatic non-lethal riot gun designed and manufactured by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal. The FN303's projectiles have been specifically designed to break up on impact, eliminating risks of penetrating injuries. Typical operating scenarios include domestic violence intervention, marking violent suspects and building surveillance

‘Paintball Gun On Steroids’ Goes To Iraq (Updated)

Soldiers in Iraq are being issued with an unusual new weapon — a paintball gun. The weapon, known as the FN303 or Individual Serviceman Non-Lethal System (ISNLS), fires a 6.5 gram projectile containing a mixture of paint and the brittle metal bismuth. RDECOM magazine (warning, giant .PDF!) says that "the shoulder-fired weapons have been deployed to troops for non-lethal crowds and riot control during detainee operations."
......a typical paintball is regulated at approximately 300-500 pounds per square inch, while the ISNLS is regulated at approximately 900 PSI

And finally from http://www.impactguns.com/store/fn_303.html

Not available for civilian sale. Law Enforcement and Government Agency Purchase or Class 3 Dealers Only.
