The tendency of leaning away is, indeed, a balance thing. Pick something up, and hold it at arms length. You'll find yourself leaning away from the object I question. While a handgun may well be light, the weight of one's *arms* is still pretty significant. The slight crouch that is taught has almost the same net effect on the shooter's center of gravity, but without leaving them as susceptible to being knocked off balance by the impulse of the shot.

When instructing about stance I tell the student that recoil is like being given a shove backwards and sort of do a demonstration of same. First with the student in a straight up posture, then in a forward lean, so they understand which works better.

A little such prep work before actual live fire time, makes things go more smoothly.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!
