This is fresh, just yesterday i was involved in an motorcycle -auto accident and the medics were first on the scene, i did notify the first one but he said ok and went on with questions about my injury. i was on the pavement and my bike was on its side. Then the police came and i did notify again. the same response, no problem. then i was put into the ambulance and on the way to hospital i was asked by medic to remove and clear the weapons, i had 2 and i did so and they placed them into a large plastic box and put a plastic tie through the lock hole. At the hospital they requested someone from security to take possession, they placed it into gun locker number 4 i was told. And i went into emergency for the care. After i was released from the ER. the nurse had some one from security bring my weapons to me in a private area near the door , they were returned and all went well... I have not given specific info because this is so fresh and do not want to say more than i should. i wanted to let the group know i was well treated and it was no big deal to the "system" that i was armed....now maybe i can get back to sleep...*smile*

Sorry to hear about your accident, hope your ok, Sounds like a good procedure at the hospital.
Seems like the officer should have cleared the weapon.

Not the same, but when I had my Bike accident over a year ago, took the Harley into a cow pasture in Indiana.
The officer on the scene after I informed took my weapon, cleared it and asked my friend to take care of it for me.
Don't think my friend had ever touched a weapon before. lol I was strapped to a back board, mud in my eyes, so couldn't have cleared my weapon.

Sounds like they had a safety procedure in place and was well implemented provided the actor (you) could physically clear the weapon since you are familiar with it.

Sorry to hear of the accident and hope you have a quick recovery.

thanks for the well wishes, i am very pleased that the police officers did let me remain armed until in the privacy of the ambulance. I am sure happy that i did not have to hand them over with all of the people watching, not a good thing, and none of the onlookers did know that i was armed. And if the police would have taken them i would have had to go to court to get a release to have them returned, most likely would cost me as much as they were worth in legal fees and court costs...

AFAIK, it should not be a hassle to have your firearms returned if they were just secured at an accident scene. It should be no different than securing other valuable personal property.

My story, when we had our trike wreck, I called my son who came down to the scene quickly. I asked him to secure my gun. At that time he did not have his CHL and and knew that he had to unload it. He did not know how to unload a 1911 and was standing in the middle of US52, surrounded by several police and fire/ems crews trying to work the action. One of the firefighters came over and said that he knew how to work the gun and unloaded it for him.

BTW, since I was effectively open carrying by the time police got there, I did not notify until the OSHP trooper asked for my name and ID. Then I just casually mentioned that I had a CHL.

BTW, the gun remained secure in the holster (Milt Sparks VM2) even though we were catapulted over the top of the car that pulled out in front of me.

Talking about retention, I was also thrown off my bike, gun remained in holster, Zlogonje pancake,
don't know how far I was thrown. Couldn't open my eyes til they cleaned the mud off in the ambulance.
