Shots fired outside. 4/23/17

Postby muxtech » Mon Apr 24, 2017 10:32 pm

On the night of 4/23/17 we went to bed early. It was cold so the windows were closed. Around 10:15 we heard gunshots - loud, close. I thought I counted 5. Soon after, I looked out the window and didn't see much happening. The phone rang. My neighbor called. The police were called. A camera system recorded video of what went down outside.

We have had a problem house on our street for several years. Cars and people coming and going in a never ending parade of people, not from our block. Rap music, general noise, and commotion in what is an otherwise quiet, peaceful, neighborhood. Up until now it's only been a nuisance. Last night, a group was congregating around a vehicle in the street. One black male of the group started walking away quickly eastbound on the sidewalk toward the corner. The vehicle then sped by him, stopped at the corner, and fired two shots west toward the walker at roughly 15 yards away. The walker fired two shots east at the vehicle which sped away north. The walker appeared un-hit as he slowly walked back to the problem house. Cars started leaving, three of them in succession. They missed the 2 responding squad cars by 30 seconds. The cars lit the house up, but by then it was dark inside and they were gone.

After getting the info on the, what and where, LE looked around for evidence. Unfortunately, they failed to notice that one car had pulled back into the driveway of the house. The police left without questioning them. All this happened between my corner and three doors down. There is video being shared with LE. I'm not at liberty to share it online, but if you see me, I'll show you sometime.

I've lived at this address for 24 years. I've been carrying for 10 of those. This is the closest situation yet involving gunfire, although last November, a 12 hour manhunt for a serial car thief did end in my driveway, but no shots were fired, and he wasn't armed apparently. But I digress. I've gathered some info via the county auditors website, and will seek to put pressure on the absentee owner and their bank going forward. This will probably be a long, drawn out fight, but they have to go somehow. It's not fair to the people who actually live here.

So that's the situation. I haven't been posting much lately, but I've been around. Life has been mostly good in Muxville until this.

Here in Toledo, we play the "was that fireworks or gun shots" game almost nightly. Most the time it's gun shots.

I disagree. The issue is *one* house in the neighborhood, it's not a bad neighborhood yet, but if the good people leave it will certainly become one. I think the OP is on the right track, pressure the absentee owner and inform the bank that holds the note (if any). I'd also start being a bit more aggressive in informing the police about the activity. Take control of the community, don't abandon it.

Update. So I went down to the local PD this evening to follow up. I had a printout on the house from the auditor's website, and the relevant video burned to a thumb drive, along with contact info. I was hoping to talk to a detective. None were available at that time. I spoke with an officer for 15-20 minutes. He will hopefully give my packet to a detective who will look it over and get back to me. We discussed several avenues of action that could be pursued in relation to the problem.

So we'll see what happens. I just Imagine what would happen to me if I walked down the street shooting 4 times. There'd be an MRAP on my front porch.

I still have a few cards to play. The bad guy house is surrounded by quite a few GG houses. My family has lived in Lorain since the 1950's. We know people.

No. My sole concern is for my family's safety. Me escalating open hostilities or getting in legal trouble does them no good. I want the law on my side. It remains to be seen whether or not that is a winning strategy. It would be nice if there were a quick and easy solution. Based on the video evidence linking that house to a serious criminal act, I don't know why they just don't get a warrant and go in. For all I know, there may be an ongoing drug investigation that they don't want to spook. Or maybe the local PD doesn't give a crap about me or my problems. I really don't know. I have to stay focused on what can be done, try to be patient, and be prepared to protect myself and my family while all this plays out.

Even if I were plotting to wipe them all out, (I'm not,) I sure wouldn't talk about that online. The deterrent fear of incarceration still works on some of us. Though I don't see any law breakers getting arrested around here lately.

muxtech is but a single individual.

A long time ago, we individuals came up with a way for a few like-minded individuals to get things done on a larger scale than ourselves...

it's called, "Tell your council person!"

Get a few (all?) of your GG neighbors to join you in attending your local city council meeting. Make a calm but impassioned plea for "something to be done". It works best if you can offer some suggestions as to what to do, of course.

You can also contact your council people directly, if you can't attend, but face-to-face works best.

The next two meetings are on the 2st and 15th of May.

Yes, exactly. These are the type of avenues we will pursue. Also, I'll be studying the city ordinances for opportunities for leverage. For example, at what point does "babysitting" for others become an unlicensed day care? If we can unseat the colony's queen, the whole hive goes away.
I know one particular city councilman would be outraged that the shots were fired from his late mother's former front yard. Like I said, we know people.
