If you have armed guards where you shop, you need to shop elsewhere.

Doesn't really bother me. After all, I go there armed, every time.

All three of the Kroger stores here, in Charlottesville, have no problem with me open carrying so I agree. I'm not worried too much about being present during a robbery.

The one that I predominately use has unarmed uniformed security that are more for loss prevention (shop lifters) than the possibility of an armed robbery.

The only time I ever saw armed security in a supermarket in Ohio was in one of the Stow Giant Eagle stores that had a bank branch in the building just yards away from the store checkout registers.

Ours doesn't have a security guard at all. I sometimes go into Kroger's in Cincinnati and they often have an armed security guard or CPD officer on an extra detail.

Funny you posted this when you did. I started noticing an armed contract security guard at one of the Kroger's I occasionally shop at - the Colerain Ave. store in Mt. Airy. They are there on an irregular basis. The other store I shop at in nearby Monfort Heights has had no guards at all. I'll strike up a conversation with the guard the next time I see him and I'll try to find out why they've suddenly appeared.

Didn't Cincy PD have a substation at one of the Kroger stores in the city at one time? As far as Brian's original question, there are no guards at the Landen or Maineville stores, so as others mentioned, maybe he needs to shop elsewhere  .

Yes, CPD had "substations" at a couple Kroger's including the one off the I-75 @ Mitchell Ave. where I shop most frequently. The entire substation idea seems to have been abandoned these days. I am told that too much loafing was being done behind those closed doors and blinds across various parts of the city.

Okay there Snarky Mark, did you guys out there in La La Landen find that AK-47 hastily dropped in Lake La La Landen yet after that l'il drama last week?

Why does that make me think of the line the anti-gunners use : If Joe Citizen feels he needs a gun to go (insert location or task), then he needs to go someplace else. I think that local, national, and world events have shown that ANYPLACE could have cause/use for armed guards.

I've heard something similar from anti gunners. A quote from one of them. "If your neighborhood is so dangerous you feel you need to carry a gun for protection you should move."

Not related to Krogers but armed guards: A generally liberal (but not anti gun) acquaintance said to me recently that she thinks the problem with what happened in Orlando with the guy being able to shoot so many without being stopped wasn't due to gun control being able to buy the guns. She said the patrons shouldn't have needed to be armed. She places some responsibility with the management of the club, for not having some plainclothes security on the inside who were armed. A business with hundreds of patrons in a theme and venue that is a potential lightning rod for all kinds of nutcases, muslim or not. She said when she went to a casino once, some guy merely threatened to use a gun, and the armed security was all over him. Also when the local Walmart had the black friday sale, there were a dozen armed cops there. She said it would be nice if businesses would protect their customers half as much as their money, and perhaps the death toll would've been less.

Not yet. It might be getting rusty by now and probably of little use. I'll let you know if I find it, though. :)

I go to Kroger near Towne Mall in Middletown frequently, and a little less so, Meijer. I've never seen security personnel at either location.

Last I heard, the Pulse club had ONE uniformed Orlando PD officer on duty in the club at the time of the shooting. Don't know if the guy targeted him first or not. My recollection is that he exchanged some shots, then covered and basically stayed put as the thing progressed. Just my best recall, but I haven't followed it in detail since the day and maybe the day after. I'm sure more has come out since then.

In central Ohio, any 24/7 grocery store might have some level of uniformed security, whether private or special duty.

It all really depends on the time of day, the part of town and if the manager can justify the cost. Many Kroger stores are no longer 24/7, choosing instead to close at 1am and reopen around 6am.

The decision to place guards at certain Kroger locations is determined by upper management and is handled on a store by store basis. Factors which this decision is based on range widely and most have been covered. These factors can include prior acts of violence or dangerous incidents or the increased threat of violence do to the location of a particular store. Also the presence of instore state liquor store can (but not always) warrant a uniformed guard especially during holidays. Depending on the risk level of that store will decide if the guard is armed or unarmed. For example if you have local teenagers causing general mischief on the weekends then more than likely a unarmed guard will be placed at that store to be a uniformed presence. If you have a high percentage of armed robberies occurring in the neighborhood than an armed guard will be placed. In certain locations the guard situation can change just based on the time of the month and the influxe of shoppers who come into the store during that timeframe.
