Re: Akron student brings loaded handgun to High School
My son and daughter were in the school when it happened. Son texts me at 3:30, "I'm ok Dad" I'm like "thats great, did something happen that I should know about?" This happened around 10:30 and he waits till 3:30 to tell me...

The one kid I knew who brought a gun to school is now a police chief in a small Ohio town.

Any idea how far into the school he got? Discovered at the entrance? 5 minutes? That could've been like an eternity if he had intended on being an active shooter.
Within five minutes, officers confronted the 17-year-old student and recovered the weapon.

Oh, he had it with him most of the day. If it wasn't with him, it was in his locker.M-Quigley wrote:Any idea how far into the school he got? Discovered at the entrance? 5 minutes? That could've been like an eternity if he had intended on being an active shooter.
He brought it to school more for the thrill and some informal show-and-tell than anything else. Basically poor decision making skills.
The idea of him shooting up the school just didn't occur to me 30+ years ago.

Me either, but a lot has happened since then. I'm guessing the metal detectors didn't work? Or did they not have any?MyWifeSaidYes wrote:Oh, he had it with him most of the day. 5 grade, year 1965 or so. For show and tell I took to school an civil war rifle. The principle checked it out and handed it back to me. Also took in a civil war sword. Nothing to see here, move along.

High School speech class on marksmanship and gun safety (Teacher was anti and I was stubborn) brought a rifle, shotgun and a revolver to school. took to Principal's office in AM and left with him until class time. When I picked them up to take to class - he asked "How do I know these are safe will not fire?" I reached in my pocket and traded him three firing pins and showed him that they were absent from the firearms.... Ahh, things were simpler then, (got a B+).

I graduated from Garfield in Akron. We had a "rifle club". Shot .22's during the winter, range was under the auditorium.
How times have changed, I'll bet that range is blocked by 3 feet of concrete now.

There weren't ANY schools in central Ohio that had metal detectors in the early 80's.M-Quigley wrote: Me either, but a lot has happened since then. I'm guessing the metal detectors didn't work? Or did they not have any?

As I said earlier, the situation was resolved at around 10:30am so not all day and Ellet does not have metal detectors.

That wasn't my question. I was around in the 80's (and 70's and 60's also) But then you didn't hear about school shootings on a seemingly regular basis either.MyWifeSaidYes wrote:There weren't ANY schools in central Ohio that had metal detectors in the early 80's.M-Quigley wrote: Me either, but a lot has happened since then. In the late eighties early nineties time period I worked a part time armed security assignment at a HS in a suburb of Dayton, OH. I was told the main reason I was there was if I saw any students leaving early I was to check their passes, and if they didn't have one to escort them to the office. Adults could go in and out of the school as they pleased. Also to monitor for vandalism and car break ins. I didn't even have any way of communicating with the school office, other than by walking in there. If I had caught someone breaking into a car I would've probably had to walk them into the office in order to call the local police. (although later on the security agency did spring for two way radios) The radios however were NOT to communicate with the school office, it was to communicate with a security dispatcher 2 counties over. If there was any kind of plan to deal with an active shooter situation I was never informed of it.

Doesn't mean such nonsense didn't happen. Just means there wasn't the instant access to news and info. There wasn't a constant competition and bombardment with news and info.

Re: Akron student brings loaded handgun to High School
When I was in school the worst thing that happen was someone had a pocket knife or had some pot.. When I was in high school, during hunting season we'd bring our rifles and shotguns and leave them in our trucks so we could go hunting after school.. None of us had any thoughts of shooting our classmates... We took pride in our school and wanted it portrayed in only the best ways.. If we had problems, we'd settle it after school with our fists. One person won and the other lost and that was it.
"Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home
Let me die in a pile of empty brass."
Amen

Re: Akron student brings loaded handgun to High School
In my sophomore year in High School I had to do a demonstration speech for speech class.
I took my 20 gauge single shot and demonstrated how to clean it. I carried it in and put it in my locker in the morning left it there until fourth period took it to class then returned it to the locker till school was out.
Not a word was ever said.
