How do you carry....(a voice recorder, that is)?

Post by 3FULLMAGS+1 »

I carry a voice recorder about half the time because it's not very convienient or easy to do, especially w/ all the other stuff I carry on my hip and in my pockets. I can't really carry it in a pants or t-shirt pocket as I'm constantly up against things and I feel it would fall out of a t-shirt pocket to easily' I have a Sony digital voice recorder. I'm assuming most carry theirs in a holster of some sorts but would like to get some opinions on how other's who carry one do it....thanks.

I use a lanyard with a detachable loop. It works with my voice recorder, phone, MP3 player, camera or anything else I can wrap the loop around.

I can tuck the voice recorder in my shirt pocket while it is still on the lanyard

Here is a link if you want to buy 1000 of them, but I got mine at Micro Center.

I usually use my phone, but when I use my mp3 player (it also records) instead, I carry it on an Israeli Army keyring that a friend gave me. It hangs from my belt loop.

Front shirt pocket, all day, every day

If I lay it sideways in there, it sort of wedges in the bottom and doesn't fall out, but it does interfere with ink pens or my phone or whatever else I might want in that pocket.
Fortunately, my work shirts have two pockets
I have been know to wear a tee shirt inside out as an undershirt just so I can carry my VR on my right side and my phone and whatnot on my left

I don't want to put it on my belt in a holster of some kind as I have enough crap on my belt now. Thinking about putting it on a thin wire from an old phone charger that can be thread through a small hole in the VR and hanging it around my neck...actually doing it right now so I can wear it tomorrow and see if it works good enough for what I'm doing....MWSY already chastised me for not having it on me the other day when I needed it....lol

Anyone got any suggestions on what type of digital recorder to get?

We've had this discussion before but it's a good topic to revisit because the gear keeps getting better.
Having said that, I just use my phone or a small recorder purchased from Pleasantguywhopacks (I think) several years ago.

I bought a Sony digital recorder....picks up EVERYTHING.....(unless you don't carry it) ! I can't remember the model, but MWSY recommended it.....maybe he'll see this and reply!......a-humm...yoo-hoo....Daaaave, where a-r-e you?

....as for carrying it around my neck w/ a piece of thin cell ph. wire under my shirt as I mentioned above....it's working for me and I hardly know it's there and others don't notice it's there either, (I've asked a few people if they could tell), and it's easy to pull up out of my shirt if I need to turn it on quick too!

Dave's not here, man.

Oh, wait. Yes I am.

Sony ICD-PX333. It's available at Walmart for around $60. The newest model in that series is the ICD-PX440. It's around $80.

These both have USB ports so you can easily copy recordings to your computer for storage and editing.

That feature is important to me since I want to post my interactions to share with you fine folks.

Last fall I bought one of these from Tmart (you get what you pay for on this site. meaning cheap is cheap.)
http://www.tmart.com/8GB-UR-08-USB-Digi ... HwodCTIAZw

It's the size and shape of a standard thumb drive.
There's no way to replace the battery. It charges when plugged into a hot USB port. (LED flashes when charging, goes steady when fully charged.)
Only one control, an on/off switch. When on it's recording.
When you plug it into your PC a little program comes up that lets you set the time on it. There's no clock, this sets what the time stamp is on the .wav files. All files are about 2 hours long so if you leave it on, like I did for 6 hours you end up with 3 files.
I didn't have a lanyard for it at the time so I just turned it on and stuck it in my shirt pocket with the mic. facing out.
Note: there is a red led that shines through that mic. hole.
Even with at least two layers of cloth over it this thing picked up, clearly, everything and every word around me that day.
You will need some sort of program to view, listen to, and edit .wav files.

I do have other digital voice recorders but this is a cute toy if nothing else.

EDIT: If nothing else but the entertainment value you might want to look at this TMART page: http://www.tmart.com/Digital-Voice-Recorders/

If I can get it open, I can disconnect the LED.

Keep it on your keyring for going through scanners at security.

Interesting...

So... Does anyone make a digital recorder that has the USB connections you mentioned but also any kind of protection to prevent recordings from being erased? Or do you need to step up to an app on your phone that can stream the audio and put it out of harms way?
