I'll add that even if it were somehow a twisted self defense situation where the clerk provoked it, all bets are off when the clerk raises his weaponless hands to show surrender and the "customer" demands the till. One cannot legitimately claim self defense if they continue to engage after the other person has clearly disengaged nor can one help themselves to the other person's valuables for retribution.
