Man buys gun, shoots self, State-ists cry cooling off period

Post by bignflnut »

"He became upset about something," she said, "And we know that he walked into a gun shop at 11:02 (a.m.), they wan a background check on him, the credit card receipt from the gun was 11:26 (a.m.), and somewhere between three and four that afternoon, he shot himself."

Black's newspaper obituary asks that in lieu of flowers, Vermonters ask that those who wish to honor Black's life to consider lobbying legislators with the following:

'In honor of Andrew R. Black, we ask that you work for legislation that imposes a reasonable waiting period between firearm purchase and possession to provide a cooling off period to guard against impulsive acts of violence.'

"It was way too easy for this 23 year old kid to go down and buy a gun - if nothing but 24 hours to just cool down and realize that...it wasn't the answer," said Black's father, a combat veteran who owns guns and keeps them locked up when not out for target practice.

Black's mother and father want to make it very clear: they don't want this to be political - they're not part of any lobbying group and they are not anti-gun.

"We are responsible gun owners, we believe in our second amendment right to own guns, but we also think 'what's the big deal? What is 24 hours?'" his mother said.
A. This is tragic and we should mourn with the Blacks.
B. The emotion of the moment has overcome their better judgement and now they are betraying the oath taken as a combat veteran. This attack on the Constitution should have consequences. Instead, they are going to profit from the death of their son, they're ghouls, not patriots. They failed as a family to raise their son and now they're going to cash in on it.
C. On policy: "What is 24 hours?" To the lady who needs protection from an angry stalker, a life. To people who have restraining orders, protection. This man waited 3 or 4 hours before acting, it didn't matter.
D. The State cannot save anyone. They're not interested in anything like Liberty, just their own lust for power over their subjects. There is no goalie --The GOP, SCOTUS, POTUS, NRA, military families like the Blacks-- name me a protector and I'll show you how flawed they are.

Who knows, maybe he has a cooling off period and actually uses that period to plan an attack on some unknowing group of church worshipers or concert goers. Sucks that he offed himself but at least nobody else was involved.

If 24 hours is good, then 72 hours is better or even seven days. Heck, 10, er, 30 day waiting period is short enough.

Yes, get the camel's nose inside the tent and it snowballs from there.

Seems that there needs to be at least a 1 year waiting period on proposing legislation for people like this. Give them time to work through the grief and think before they attempt to impose their will upon their fellow citizens.

'In honor of common sense and reason, we ask that you work through your grief before proposing legislation that infringes on the rights of others; to provide a cooling off period to guard against impulsive, irrational, emotional acts of violence.'

"It was way too easy for this couple to go down and propose ill conceived legislation - if nothing but 12 months to just cool down and realize that...it wasn't the answer," said the rational citizens who own guns and don't run to the state to "solve" every ill that may befall another individual.

The rational citizens want to make it very clear: they don't want this to be political - they're not part of any lobbying group and they are not anti-grief.

"We are responsible gun owners, we believe in our second amendment right to own guns, but we also think 'what's the big deal? What is 12 months?'".

How is a waiting period going to prevent anything? Didn't some woman a year or so back rent a gun at a gun range in Ohio and commit suicide? Or do they want a waiting period for that too?

Renting guns would end if they had their say. Of course, everyone would politely turn in their guns, too, in their world.

How about the waiting period for a piece of rope and a chair?

Cooling off periods are like tracers...they work both ways. For every life arguably saved by forcing a cooling off period there are likely to be more lost when an immediate and legitimate need for a gun is thwarted. It is also overblown because of the likelihood that being denied a gun, the subject simply chooses another method. Also, the vast majority of suicides the gun is already present in the situation if that is what is used.
God,
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can
and the Wisdom to know the difference.

Carrying a gun is a right, not a crime.

Gun control is racist.

*Babylon Bee*
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Taking on a previously unregulated weapon, the federal government has instituted a five-day waiting period for all Nerf guns. “We decided it was time to act when we noticed how large the ammo is,” explained bureaucrat Joseph Clarkson. “The darts it fires are far larger than the average bullet, which must mean it’s a far deadlier weapon... as far as we understand things or care to understand things.”

Nerf guns use air to fire foam darts at velocities so high that, if used improperly, they could “really, really irritate someone.” Kids will often purchase Nerf guns when the urge to have fun suddenly overtakes them, but regulators hope this new waiting period will give them time to “cool-off” and “maybe decide to read a book or something instead.” In addition, the purchaser will undergo a background check to make sure he is not the sort of kid who would use the Nerf gun to “shoot a cat in the face.”
And High Capacity mags!
