DAYTON — The Dayton post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars recently asked the U.S. Department of Defense for seven rifles for its honor guard.

Instead, the DOD said it wanted back the 10 rifles it said were issued to Post 9936 back in November 1949.

The only problem is that Post Commander Ron Seals said he has no idea where the rifles would have gone over the past 64 years, and no one is alive who was a VFW member back then.

The DOD said it either wanted the rifles, or a police report, so Seals contacted the Dayton Police Department and asked them to come to the post, 1720 E. Third St., to take a report.

The DOD was able to provide the serial numbers for all 10 rifles, the report shows. However, it’s not clear their value because the report just lists $1 apiece.

That is standard procedure for a Veterans Post, you must return your existing issue for updated rifles.

OK, did they have an honor guard previously? What were they using?

Per Sherrod Brown, they should be issued matchlock muskets... with plugged barrels.
