Since I carry while jogging
I can only imagine the trouble I would be in if I defended myself in a situation like this.
I carry also but decided to add pepper spray to my EDC tools when I go out for a walk. The neighborhood that I live in has had some troublesome dogs attack pedestrians. Yet, none as far as I know, have submitted a complaint with the police department.
I like dogs and have owned a lot of them through the years. Everyone of them obeyed me without any problems. They knew what was going to happen to them if they failed to obey. When they did obey my commands they were rewarded.
With that said, I don't have a fear of dogs but don't like getting bit either. I pulled my revolver on a menacing boxer a few years ago and ordered the owner to get the dog under control. That's when the owner decided that conversing with the animal wasn't getting anywhere and exercised physical control.
I didn't want to shoot the dog but would if it lunged at me a 2nd time. After that, I decided to start carrying pepper spray.
There are those that argue that pepper spray is ineffective against dogs. One of the reasons is that it may be ineffective is when it's sprayed from a long distance the animal may not smell enough of it to be bothered by it. Nevertheless, with a nose 400 times more sensitive than a human's it may be enough to get the animal to turn away or remain at a safe distance.
A person using pepper spray has to wait until the dog gets close enough to get sprayed in the face like a human being. One blast to the face from five feet away will cause the dog a lot of discomfort. This sounds cruel but it's better than shooting an animal that might have a chance at rehabilitation. Given that I'm use to dogs, I can wait till I see the whites of the animal's eyes then blast it with the pepper spray.
I wonder what would have happened had the victim been carrying and shot the dog. I'll give you three guesses and the first one would be correct.
