The area’s only public shooting range will close down Monday, Oct. 1 and remain closed for the next year as the state begins $3 million in major improvements.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will begin construction on the Spring Valley Wildlife Area Shooting Range near Waynesville, renovating the firearms and archery ranges among other improvements. The range is expected to stay closed until fall of 2019.

Other work includes improved backstops, a new entrance, new restroom facilities and additional shooting stations.
The Division of Wildlife plans to spend up to $20 million over the next several years adding and renovating shooting ranges across the state.

Funding for the project comes from the Wildlife Restoration Act excise taxes collected from the sale of firearms and ammunition, as well as the sale of Ohio hunting licenses.

Shooters looking for an alternative shooting range should consider the Deer Creek Wildlife Area range, according to the ODNR.

Spring Valley is busy. The facility already has running water/indoor restrooms, unlike some other Ohio Class A ranges. They could generate more revenue if they didn't close at 5pm year round; the reason given is staffing. I believe their math is upside down, no surprise for a government entity. Think they're closed on Mondays and Tuesdays as well, reserved for LE use. Been told it's not utilized much by any departments any more.

That next closest range mentioned is at least thirty miles away, and it's seasonal as memory serves.

Still waiting on the Delaware range to even break ground ing the new range. They closed the old one two years ago and just never reopened it.

I noticed that earlier this year, and meant to ask about it. Wonder what the hold up is? And this will make me keep better track of the progress at Spring Valley.

If we get some Democrat-favoring changes in the Statehouse and Governor's mansion for next year, that won't help.
