An armed man is dead and two others are injured after a shooting at the Walmart in Tumwater about 5 p.m.
They [Police] then responded to shots fired in the area of the nearby roundabout, Wohl said. They learned that a man had fired shots trying to carjack two vehicles.

A 16-year-old girl was injured, but not seriously. The suspect then headed to Walmart, Wohl said.

When they arrived at the Walmart, they learned that a man had tried to carjack a car, and shot a man inside the car twice. He then tried to carjack another car. Two citizens in the parking lot drew weapons; at least one of them shot and killed the armed man, she said.

A man who would rather not be identified stopped the crime spree when he shot and killed Day. Police say the 47-year-old man is from Oakville, Washington. He is a pastor, volunteer firefighter, and medic.
Witnesses say one of the armed civilians grabbed a medical kit to treat a man who was shot by Day. The victim was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He remains listed in critical condition.
Investigators say Day went to the Walmart during his crime spree to get more ammunition. He has a history of drug and weapons crimes.

Investigators believe he was high and was suffering from mental health issues Sunday.

Update to the story: One of the two concealed carriers who confronted the carjacker is an EMT and pastor. Also the carjacker started shooting inside the Walmart, stealing the ammo instead of buying it.

Court records show Day’s criminal history included violations of a domestic-violence protection order, felony assault and making death threats.

But Tumwater Police Wednesday didn’t yet know precisely what sparked the frenzy.

“He appeared to have maybe some mental health and drug issues and was acting somewhat paranoid,” said Laura Wohl, spokeswoman for the department.

Day entered the Walmart, made for the back of the store and shot open a display case to get more ammunition. The gunshots sent customers and workers running for the exits, witnesses said. Day headed back toward the parking lot.

At that point, “the gunman came past me waving and pointing his gun and exited the building,” George said. The pastor hooked up with another armed civilian, which news reports have identified as Jesse Zamora of Kennewick.

They followed Day outside, watching as he tried to take more vehicles. At some point, George drew his own firearm. He watched Day shoot twice into the driver’s side of a vehicle, critically injuring a man, and start to move toward where George thought his family might be.

George got into a position “to have a safe shot” at Day.

Day tried to take another car. George shot him. Day fell to the ground.
