According to the story one of the four had a gun. Just more proof that crime can happen anywhere at any time, even in circumstances where you don't have two hands available.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Memphis Police say four men tried to rob a man who was carrying his infant daughter outside a McDonald's Tuesday afternoon, and the victim fought back, shooting one of the suspects.

It happened in the 1400 block of S. Trezevant. Police say four men tried to rob the victim, and beat him up, that's when the victim pulled out a gun and shot one of the suspects. The accused robbers took off in a black Infiniti.

Police say moments later, a black Infiniti pulled into the fire station in the 2900 block of Lamar, with a man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.

UPDATE: Apparently there's more to the story, assuming all of it is true. I have an aquantence who was a newspaper claimed he "dropped" a baby on the ground, when in fact he carefully placed the carseat with the baby inside on the ground while he rendered aide. The paper ended printing a retraction, but not before a lot of people read it and got angry over it.

^ Heck, modern detachable infant seats are built like tanks. He could have dropped the child from twice carrying height, and the kid probably wouldn't even have been roused from napping.

OK, all joking aside, I don't think what the dad was wrong, at all, in putting the child down - whether he dropped or even threw the carrier is irrelevant.

Incoming fire would most likely have been directed at him, and getting his infant out of the direct line of fire was smart, no matter what.

That is kinda what I was thinking. Perhaps the detractors rather him have held on to the infant and used him as a human shield perhaps?

I agree, the kid on the ground is the safer place to be in that situation.
