Post by bignflnut »

SANTA FE, Texas - A spokesman for police confirmed Friday that they are investigating an active-shooter situation at Santa Fe High School.

The following message was posted on the Santa Fe Independent School District's website:

"This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter. The district has initiated a lockdown. We will send out additional information as soon as it is available."

It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured.

Texas AG: "The more we regulate, the more time we lose and the more people we're going to lose. I would prefer to have people in place to protect our children, not leave it open for someone who's not going to follow a gun law to come in and kill as many children as they want to."
CNN also has a minute+ long clip of POTUS addressing the tragedy (kinda selling ERPOs, and once again failing to strike gun free school zones)

Sounds like up to 10 dead, 2 males (likely students) in custody.

Hillary Clinton

Every day that we fail to act on gun violence, we are failing our children. This should be a day for soul searching across America - and that soul searching should be matched with legislating to begin dealing with this national shame.

Insert joke about national shame who has no soul to search.

Update VI: In an afternoon press conference, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott revealed more details about today's school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas.

The shooter, 17-year-old Dimitrious Pagourtzis, used a sawed-off shotgun and a .38 revolver in the attack. Both weapons belonged to his father.

He also filled the world in on some of the shooter's odd behavior. For example, he wore a trench coat to school every day even when it was 90-plus degrees. He was also picked on by the school's coaches.

According to information contained in his journals, on his computer, and on his cell phone, the shooter said he wanted to to commit suicide after the attack. Instead, he gave himself up and is currently at the Santa Fe Police Department.

The final death toll? 10 dead, 10 injured.

And the murderer will be rewarded with more publicity (and sympathy) than Mick Jagger and Madonna have gotten in the last five years combined.

But it's important to remember that those like him (and MS-13) "have the spark of divinity", whereas gun owners like you and me are "terrorists"...

Tristen Patterson, a 16-year-old junior at Sante Fe, considered Pagourtzis a friend. He told The Associated Press that Pagourtzis was into video games that simulated war, and that he sometimes talked about guns — firearms that he liked or wanted to get.
The above is a quote from an interview with one of the kids. My personal belief is that the 1st person shooter games allow these kids to rehearse the act, over and over, gain muscle and mental memory, and become numbed to people dying, to the point it just doesn't seem real.

They might have an underlying issue that will be acted on, but these games magnify it.

And rock and roll will make us worship the devil, too.

If violent video games and media are instigating these problems, why do we not see the same trend towards violence (obviously not "gun violence," as firearms are much more tightly restricted) in the children and young adults of, especially, Asian countries? Swords and knives are featured - and let's not forget that various vehicles and the mayhem that can cause is greatly glorified in particularly the earliest versions of the Grand Theft Auto series...and all of these are just as easily accessed by our teens as they are those of other cultures around the world.

Anyone here watch Japanese Animation - aka "Anime?"

Did rock music turn us into sadists?

Or maybe it's hard-core rap that's the problem.

Or maybe it's metal?

Or maybe it's Juggalo?

Maybe it's dancehall/"badmanism?"

Or maybe it's more violent sports that's the problem? After all, it's about aggression, isn't it?

The truth of the matter is that the older generation will always regard the recreational activities of the younger generation as a source of any perceived "problem."

Some of Adam Lanza's favorite video games included Super Mario Bros and Dance Dance Revolution (REF: https://www.zmescience.com/research/tec ... sion-0534/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ).

Correlation isn't causation - and that goes double when even that correlation is highly contested.
The reality is that the risk factors are just that, risk factors - we've got to stop trying to place the blame on a THING (like how some love to blame guns, right?), and start looking at what the underlying issues really are.

There's a serious mental-health component to the problem.

There's a serious cultural component to the problem. Whether it is bullying (if the source cited by bignflunt is to be believed, it looks like this type of behavior isn't just between kids, but extend to adults, too.... and yes, is that trench coat in 90-degree heat "weird?" sure! but who among us cannot recall as kids seeing various different social groups dress in different ways? even in the early-90s, we had our "trench-coat mafia" at our high-school) or a failure of the family unit or the media literally giving these shooters instant celebrity status (look up "Incel," for some disturbing insight into the dark corners of the Internet), there's something awry here, too.

But maybe "being bullied" is just another thing to be blamed, too? Maybe it's the inability of children today to endure - and overcome - bullying that signals some kind of breakdown of the values we used to teach our children?

It is the constant rehearsal. Years ago when I took martial arts, over 90 % of the class was rehearsal. No practicing against another person or the bag. Just rehearsal. Over and over, going through the motions until you got them right. Then it could be put into practice.

Rather than fumbling around with reloading, or just standing there staring when the first kid becomes a victim, it is acquire a target, shoot, acquire a target, shoot, acquire a target, shoot, reload, and repeat. Just like in the game that they have played over and over and over until it is just muscle and mental memory. Then when they snap, it is just like they were playing a game.

Then they just turn off and it is over.

It is not the games in and of themselves. It is the games and someone with an underlying problem that the 1st person shooter games enable the devil hiding inside. The warped personality who gets even more warped.

How many of you ever went deer hunting ? I would bet the first time you went, a bunch of you just stood there and looked when the deer ran by. Because you were not mentally prepared to go through the motions. Your adrenaline came up, you were shaking so bad, you lost fine motor control. But when you have gone through it a 1000 times, over and over and over, that part of your brain just takes over. Do you have to think about walking, talking, doing something with your hands ? No, it is the subconscious layer doing the controlling from years of repetition.

That is why the armed forces, some LEO departments and especially the elite divisions of the armed forces do the training that they do. You should watch some of the shows on the military and history channels that show how they practice over and over and over until they don't have to think, so that it doesn't bother them, they don't stand there looking at the enemy that just went down, it is on to the next.

Just like in video games.
