Let's see...

Assume the gun is loaded....

never point the gun at anything you are not willing to shoot...

keep your finger off the trigger until it is on target....

If he is experienced at handling guns and knows the four rules...manslaughter is appropriate.

I've always been taught that this is not only a hard-and-fast rule of safe gun handling, but is itself proper firearms etiquette.

And this is really the part that I find hard to reconcile, with this event: Anderson claims that he's been shooting since childhood. This is one of those hard rules which becomes habit. It's an observation which can be had even in handing off a water-gun or power-tool to someone - you can always tell who the shooter are, just by how they index their finger off the trigger on anything which even remotely has a "trigger."

Just because someone has been shooting since childhood does not mean that they have been properly taught how to shoot.

Yep. Heck I even safe a firearm handed to me by my Dad. And him, I'd trust with my life and my fortune. I don't do it because I don't trust him, I do it because that is how I was taught (by him and others) and it is the right thing to do. It is how I taught my kids. We recited the four rules before we even touched a firearm.

^ Understood and agreed - nevertheless, I find it more surprising that this would be the case, versus that of a novice shooter.

As WY_Not noted, for most shooters who've grown up around guns, checking the status of the weapon when handed to you - even if the individual who hands you the weapon has literally just cleared it in front of your face - is something that's commonly taught.

You're absolutely right, this individual may sadly have never been taught correctly. There's always that.

Sure. Six weeks at Lackland AFB, TX, nine months at Keesler AFB, MS, and remainder of my four year enlistment at Barksdale AFB, LA. Folks at all three places were pretty strict about firearms safety. And, don't get me started on the folks at Barksdale AFB... they took safety to a whole new level when playing with nuclear weapons and nuclear weapons platforms (B-52G and H). Now I did spend a month at Roswell AFB, Spain. They were a little more lax. The Spaniards had teenage boys with machine guns guarding the gates.

I was raised there. :)

Well, not "deep," considering that it was metro-Atlanta, but it was before the mid-90s boom :P  , and gun-racks were in several of my friends' hand-me-down trucks parked in the high-school lot, along with the fact that at beginning with the first day of hunting season, rifles, shotguns, handguns and bows/crossbows were allowed to be brought on-campus, checked in with one of the gym coaches and locked up for the day. Busses? Yup - Check them with the bus driver.

One of my best friends in my late-teen years had access to loaded weapons at all times. His father was one of the trainers at SIONICS, and they had a few somewhat scary security concerns.

Don't get me wrong: I have seen and still see plenty of "bubba," both in my childhood in The South as well as even to this day, right here in NE-Ohio. :(
