A Carroll County sheriff's spokesman said the deputy had to shoot the animal because it was charging towards him, making him fear for his life.

That is about the dumbest thing I has ever seen..... Holding up traffic for a groundhog crossing the road and then killing it ....

Did the secret service kill the rabbit that attacked Carter?

BTW - According to one of the comments rodents, like groundhogs, are rarely rabid. So I don't see how that jackwagon could have feared for his life.

Distemper, rabies and mange can afflict just about any critter.
Seen plenty of sick ones while out hunting. And yes, I have had groundhogs charge if they are cornered or wounded.
Gave one a 55gr enema out of a 22/250 once....darn thing tried to bite me when I got close. I really was in no mood for those chompers to get in my toes.
