Buckeye Lake police chief accidentally fires gun after losing finger
BUCKEYE LAKE - The Buckeye Lake police chief faces new restrictions after accidentally firing his gun one day after he had a finger amputated.

Chief James Hanzey had his right ring finger amputated Friday. The incident was not work related.

Hanzey informed Buckeye Lake Mayor Peggy Wells Saturday afternoon of his surgery and that he had returned home from the hospital, according to village records.

Hanzey, who has been the chief for nearly five years and with the department for more than 30 years, told Wells he had a letter from his doctor clearing him to return to light desk work. He said he would return Monday. Wells, however, said she did not clear the chief to return to work.

Hanzey responded to a call Saturday evening where he accidentally fired his gun in the Leisure Village area of Buckeye Lake.
Sounds like he did not follow the doc's advice, nor use common sense. Good thing that no one was hurt.

And snowflakes believe that we can solely rely on LEOs and the goodwill of our fellow man? I have the utmost respect for anyone who wears the uniform of a first responder. But they are human and do stupid things, just like the rest of us. I think we all know that since Cain and Able, bad stuff is going to happen.

Right after surgery, still has drugs in his system, probably on Tylenol and Codeine, while he's driving and handling a gun. Can you say 'recipe for disaster'? He's lucky he didn't kill someone as he drove to the scene.

I doubt that responding to calls wasn't what his doctor meant by "light duty".
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

(...the saga continues...)

Well, the only remaining Buckeye Lake cop (the Chief, Nine-finger Jim) can no longer respond to calls for service.

Seems he was unable to pass his firearms re-certification. Twice.

He says he is sure he will pass it on his third try.
