"President Trump, hosting the Public Safety Medal of Valor Awards Ceremony Wednesday afternoon at the White House Tuesday, said he has directed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to draft regulations that would ban any devices that would turn legal, semi-automatic firearms into automatic weapons, after studying the issue of bump stocks from the Las Vegas shooting. The regulations will be finalized "very soon," he said. "

Memo says "no loopholes"

So...if you have one...you're a criminal...

The anti-gun cultists say they want "compromise"?

How's THIS for a compromise:

In exchange for bringing bump stocks under the NFA, Congress repeals the Hughes Amendment.

Let them choke on THAT one.

This article has a different twist on the issue of banning bump stocks.
...the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms concluded during the Obama administration that it lacked the legal authority to prohibit certain bump stock devices. (The Congressional Research Service produced a useful memo describing the regulatory history.

And in December, The New York Times reported that ATF officials were telling various federal and local officials that the agency would not be able to restrict the devices without new legislation, despite a regulatory review the Justice Department had already announced.
But the Obama ATF didn't beg off on bump stocks because it wanted them in circulation. It did so because the argument for prohibiting them is weak under current law.
The article basically says that Congress should pass a bill that bans the bump stocks.

Yeah, I think everybody in DC knows that the black letter law doesn't let BATFE ban bumpstocks. So if they try to anyway some manufacturer will sue over it and the ban will get tossed by the courts. I'm fine with that outcome.

Congress won't be so stupid as to change the black letter law to give BATFE the power to ban them. They know what happened in 1994.

This is the Potomac Two-Step. Administration blames congress. Congress blames the administration. The courts just rent the dance hall for chuckles.

They won't have to worry about being stupid - because the NRA will cover for them, since the NRA has already called for them to be banned.

I'm afraid bump stocks are toast.

GOA public statement, joined in progress:
“Additionally, a ban on bump stocks would ignore the ATF’s previous public comment period that garnered over a hundred thousand comments, which were overwhelmingly anti-regulation.
“Banning bump stocks will not stop criminals from getting guns, but it can be used by gun controllers to ban triggers, magazines, and semi-automatic firearms.

“While Trump ran as a pro-gun candidate, this action does not appear to line up with his campaign rhetoric. Instead of further restricting the right to keep and bear arms, Trump should urge Congress to pass H.R. 34, which would repeal gun-free school zones, an issue Trump campaigned on.

“Regardless of Trump’s future actions on bump stocks, Gun Owners of America remains committed to fighting any bump stock ban or regulation — including the use of legal action.”
