Outback steakhouse in TN asks uniformed cop to leave

Outback steakhouse in TN asks uniformed cop to leave because of his openly carried handgun.

A uniformed officer carrying his service weapon was asked to leave an Outback Steakhouse restaurant because it is a designated “gun-free zone.”

Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency officer Andrew Ward went to Outback Steakhouse to have dinner with his wife Friday evening, he wrote in a public Facebook post.

Ward said in the post that a manager approached him and requested that he put his gun in his truck. Ward told the manager that he could not because he was in uniform and had to have his weapon on his person.

The manager left to make a call, Ward writes, and then returned to ask Ward and his wife to leave because Outback is a “gun free zone.”
In a statement to NewsChannel9, the Director of Media and Community Relations for Outback’s parents company, Bloomin Brands, said:

“We’ve always allowed uniformed law enforcement officers to carry their side arms inside our restaurants. A manager made a mistake and we have discussed this with her. We have contacted the guest personally and apologized."

Ward said the chain told him “there was another customer that was ‘scared for her life’ who was seated across” from the couple, and said “she was afraid because ‘police are shooting people.’”

According to Ward’s post, “This customer went on to demand to be escorted to her vehicle out of fear of being shot.”
What is an escort supposed to do in protecting a customer from an armed cop? Or anybody armed for that matter, since the employees aren't armed either. :?:

Is that a corporate policy? I didn't recall seeing any no gun signs at the Outback steakhouse in Knoxville.

I've read that corporate has a "no guns policy" except for law enforcement. However, they aren't very consistent about posting, from place to place. I have no desire to spend money there now.

The woman who complained about the uniformed cop and demanded the manager "protect" her has mental health issues, far as I'm concerned.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

I've carried at countless Outbacks. I have never seen a gun buster sign. Knowing their company policy, I'll eat my steaks elsewhere.

I question the accuracy of that "she demanded to be escorted" story. Could be a story the manager cooked up to avoid looking like a total Jackwagon. Didn't work.

Haven't been to an Outback in a while, but I don't recall it being posted.

I know some here disagree, but if they are claiming to prohibit carriers (other than LEO), but haven't bothered to post, they're trying to ride that barbed-wire fence and avoid "offending" anyone if they can help it. If they won't commit to their position enough to post at the entrance, screw 'em, I'll carry and they'll never know. If you believe strongly enough in something to have a formal position, then have the cajones to tell your customers about it.

Unfortunately that attitude/action still puts money in the pockets of anti-gun business.

Is it possible that some Outback steakhouses aren't owned by corporate?

Well actually, docachna has a point. Spending money there may not be giving money to anti-gunners. It may be giving money to very "PC" coprorations trying to kep everyone happy with their mostly unknown policy.

Outback sells franchises. The franchise fee is $10 grand with an estimated $1.6 million to startup, $500 grand upfront. I have no idea what policies the franchisee is required to abide by though.

Meh. Sitting on the fence and trying to compromise with both sides is no better than being anti-gun. Whether they enforce it or not, the criminal protection policy is still on the books. The steaks we raise are better then their crap anyway.
