180 days for manslaughter in failed youtube .50DE book stunt

Post by Bruenor »

I didn't find the original story posted here, so sorry for the new thread if I missed the original.
Judge only gave her 180 days for her part in this stupidity. Her kids on the other hand have to grow up without a father.
I can't believe anyone with any sense would have tried this 'stunt' willingly

A 20-year-old mother from Minnesota has pleaded guilty to a second-degree manslaughter charge in the death of her boyfriend, whom she shot to death as part of a botched YouTube stunt earlier this year.

Monalisa Perez took the plea deal last week and is expected to be sentenced to 180 days in jail, followed by 10 years of probation.
The woman told police on a 911 call that Ruiz had asked her to fire a bullet from a .50-caliber Desert Eagle pistol into an encyclopedia as he held it against his body, but the projectile penetrated the volume and fatally wounded the young father.

The fatal shooting was captured on two cameras that had been set up to record the stunt. Police said they do not plan to release the footage.

Their three-year-old daughter, Aaliyah, was present when the shooting occurred.

'We were doing a YouTube video and it went wrong. Please hurry up,' Perez told the 911 dispatcher.

Prior to the shooting, Perez had tweeted: 'Me and Pedro are probably going to shoot one of the most dangerous videos ever. HIS idea not MINE'.

I remember the original story. My understanding was they had tried this multiple times with other books and none had been penetrated. Unfortunately, whatever book they picked for the live demo was not the same thickness, hardness, etc. So in their mind, a book could stop a bullet.

I am not a lawyer. My answers are based on research, knowledge, and are generally backed up with facts, the Ohio Revised Code, or the United States Code.
