You can never say for certain and I'm sure some happen exactly as claimed, but IMO a lot of these "I was trying to clean/unload it" are really "I was screwing around with it and didn't realize it was loaded".
I'm pretty much past the point of giving any credence to claims of "I didn't know how it worked" as an excuse. Purely out of curiosity I've searched up several different firearms on YouTube, specifically looking videos that show loading/unloading. Haven't struck out yet.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!
