The theft of Biehls' service weapon occurred in the 2700 block of Wayne Avenue during the period of July 27 and 28, according to an incident report that includes no narrative, no supplemental information, no name of victim or circumstances of the theft.

The police department’s Second District headquarters is 2721 Wayne Ave.

The single-page incident report, dated Aug. 14, does not include the name of the complainant and lists "street/hghway/alley" in the section "method of operation information."

A follow up story about this incident.

Confronting gun violence has been central to Biehl’s career in Dayton and previously during his nearly 25 years in the Cincinnati Police Department.

In 2006, Biehl implemented a neighborhood gun violence reduction initiative called CeaseFire Cincinnati, according to his biography. Biehl joined Dayton police in January 2008 and has partnered with other agencies to introduce the Community Initiative to Reduce Gun Violence.
There is an organization called CeaseFire Cincinnati, which has a no guns symbol on their facebook page. The organization was allegedly taken over by someone else in 2012.

CINCINNATI -- If there were fewer guns in Cincinnati, would the city experience fewer shootings and violent crime?

According to the Rev. Ennis Tait, pastor of the Church of the Living God in Avondale and director the church’s nonprofit outreach, Project Nehemiah, the answer to that question is “yes.”

In 2012, Project Nehemiah took over CeaseFire, a former City of Cincinnati initiative aimed at reducing gun violence. Since then, it’s held four events during which it gives out $100 gift cards in exchange for firearms.
If the service weapon isn't recovered locally by DPD, perhaps they can look for it in the next gun buyback south of Dayton, although it will probably have been used a few times by then.

Yeah, those groups rename themselves occasionally, lest even dumb people figure out they've been hustling donations and achieving no positive results for years and years. And it helps to change the spokescammer talking to the cameras, for the same reason.

Often they get a minister, that guarantees a certain percentage of the public will believe everything they say as leader of the group/collaborative/ coalition.

That would be cute. Think they really would settle for "no questions asked"?

Must've been some threat imminent, they usually carry the bullet in their shirt pocket.

Follow up: The city is being very tight lipped about the circumstances of the missing gun. Mayor Nan Whaley (possible candidate for governor) just sighs and smiles when a TV news crew kept asking her various details about how or where it happened, replying “We don’t comment on any sort of administrative investigation while it’s in process,”
Biehl personally reported the gun missing, said police spokeswoman Cara Zinski-Neace. He was re-issued the same model handgun on July 28, according to a handgun registration form.

But other details about the chief’s location when the gun was stolen and whether it was stolen from his vehicle, person, home or office remain unanswered by city and police officials. Also unclear is whether the chief’s three magazines were stolen, though off-duty officers who do carry guns are required to keep them loaded, according to department policy.

The Dayton Daily News and News Center 7 first reported the gun’s theft Monday after inquiring with police officials last week when the newsroom received a tip about the theft.

In the past, Dayton police have come forward to the public seeking information about guns stolen from officers.

Update:

http://www.whio.com/news/breaking-news/ ... dagpCaYoM/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The city of Dayton has disciplined police Chief Richard Biehl after his service weapon was stolen last month.

The city’s law department said an administrative review concluded that Biehl may have been able to prevent the theft because entry into his vehicle, where the gun was located, was not forced, the city said in a statement.

Biehl was issued a written reprimand and will have to reimburse the city $469 for the cost of the weapon.

“Chief Biehl has accepted responsibility for this incident and has remained professional throughout the entire investigation,” said City Manager Dickstein in a prepared statement. “I believe his proven track record of leadership and innovative policing strategies has made the Dayton community a safer place. My confidence in him as the head of the Dayton Police Department has not wavered.”

Biehl said he takes full responsibility for not adequately securing his gun. “Necessary action will be taken in the near future to provide a means to better secure firearms in city issued vehicles,” he said.

So lemme get this straight. Chief left his duty weapon in an unlocked police car. BG gratefully walks off with it. The solution ? Spend taxpayer money for "a means to better secure firearms in city issued vehicles".

Really.

Maybe take the da** thing in the house, yo ??????!? Even the 'hood rats ain't THAT stupid.

Stealing a gun from a cop car is fairly brazen, no?

Brazen is the new normal. I just read about a couple teens who - on different occasions - went to the Dayton Mall Walmart and threatened employees forcing them to open the iPhone case so they could steal phones. Compared to that, taking a gun in plain view from an unlocked car - even a cop car - doesn't seem surprising.

I couldn't find any info that suggested the gun was stolen from a marked police car or cruiser.

The car was probably unmarked and a BG wouldn't have given a second thought to stealing something from it.

I'm not saying a marked car would have stopped them, just that there was nothing to even slow them down.
